Bestselling author Holly Chamberlin’s heartfelt novel, set in a beautiful Maine beach town, tells of three sisters—and one summer filled with revelations… When Poppy Higgins left Yorktide, Maine, for Boston, she pictured future visits home as brief diversions from her real life in the big city. Fate had different ideas, and at twenty-five, Poppy has been called back to care for her two younger sisters following their father’s death. Sixteen-year-old Daisy resents Poppy’s long absence and chafes under her sometimes fumbling efforts to be a parent. Violet, now thirteen, is a virtual stranger to her oldest sister. Once a happy, united family, the Higginses seem adrift, and Poppy longs to escape her responsibilities. But when Daisy befriends Evie, an enigmatic newcomer to Yorktide, the young woman will be an unlikely catalyst in the sisters’ journey back to each other. For as Poppy discovers the deep loss in Evie’s life, she awakens to the truth about her own, and about the town, and the people, she’s tried to leave behind. Filled with the candid warmth of real sisterhood, Summer with My Sisters explores the many forms a family can take, and the unspoken ties that endure, season after season…

Faith, Hope, and Joy. As children, the Garland sisters seemed to fit together as seamlessly as their names. Banding together helped them survive their free-spirited parents, who moved from place to place and whim to whim, until their father took off for good. But as the girls grew up, they became virtual strangers. This Christmas, they intend to spend the holidays in their usual way: far apart. But their ailing grandmother wants her girls around her once more, and Hope, always the peacemaker, convinces her reluctant sisters to travel to Leavenworth, Washington. Hope is immediately charmed by the unique setting, modeled on a Bavarian village, and by her grandmother’s handsome, mysterious neighbor. Still, there’s scant trace of celebration within the Garland family. Joy’s main motivation for visiting is to secure start-up funds for a coffee shop. Faith, oblivious to her children’s unhappiness, is waiting until the holidays are over to announce that her marriage is over and she has a new love. With a festive schedule of candy-cane martinis, hot tubs, and snowball fights, Hope tries to expose and heal old resentments, but moving forward as a family will take more than a little seasonal goodwill. Against a stunning winter backdrop, Mary Carter brings rare insight to the deep and complicated nature of sisterhood—a bond that endures far beyond childhood, and can always bring us home again. Praise for Mary Carter and her novels “Guaranteed to become one of the books on your shelf that you’ll want to read again.” —The Free Lance-Star on The Pub Across the Pond “The unique spin Carter takes on the familiar theme of self-discovery gives this a welcome, fresh feel.” --Publishers Weekly on My Sister’s Voice

"One hundred years after his death in 1910. Lev Nikolaevich Leo Tolstoy continues to be regarded as one of the world's greatest writers. Historically, little attention has been paid to his wife, Sofia Andreevna Tolstaya. Acting in the capacity of literary assistant, translator, transcriber and editor, she played an important role in the development of her husband's career. Her memoirs which she entitled My Life - lay dormant for almost a century. Now the book's first-time-ever appearance in Russia is complemented by an unabridged and annotated English translation." "Tolstaya paints an intimate and honest portrait of her husband's character, setting forth new details about his life to which she alone was privy. She describes her extensive correspondence with many prominent figures in Russian and Western society, making My Life a unique account of late-19th- and early-20th-century Russia, with its cast of characters ranging from peasants to the Tsar himself. Her engaging narrative reveals not only her significant contributions to her husband's work but also her considerable talent as an author in her own right."--BOOK JACKET.

Humans often encounter expectations that they behave differently from the people they are. Many left-handed people have trod lightly on this path. When internalized such conflicts can be profoundly disconcerting and must be resolved. Each transgendered person contending with her or his suppressed gender identity exists in a continual state of such conflict. That person is and is not the child, adolescent, and adult she or he has learned to be. Experience and reflection will ultimately prove that essential identity is far different from education and endeavor. Even inevitably recurring brief secret episodes of release merely reconfirm the transgendered persons implacable obsession rather than providing respites from it. Such a conflict will not, because it cannot, resolve itself. The focus of The Fallacy of Assignable Gender is gender identity conflict. The work begins with an intimately personal account of a forty-year struggle with that conflict. The condition is examined from the perspectives of medical science, religion, political theory, the arts, and others. Perhaps as compelling as the nature of the condition is societys reaction to it. Fifteen common mischaracterizations share an apparent determination by those who proffer them to ignore or reject what has been learned at great cost. Each straw man is explored and refuted. A four-step plan is presented whose goal is elimination of gender identity suppression. Whether the readers interest is personal or professional, ending the social and economic scourge of suppressed gender identity will require a broad concerted effort. Its undertaking is long overdue.

My Life Is a Soap Opera is just what the title entails. One moment I'm enjoying my teen life and boom--someone close to me dies tragically. I get married and envision living happily ever after and boom--my husband hits me so hard I fall to the floor. Moving forward I live with a man who tells me all the time how much he loves me and boom--all that time he is married. There's a song by George Strait titled "All My Exes Live in Texas"--well, all my exes are from hell! I can vividly hear the voice of the opening of the soap opera Days, as a child I was in awe looking at that hourglass while listening to the announcer say, "Like the sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives." That hourglass is me with the addition of me always having a positive attitude. This book is a collection of memories that I choose to share.
