Marie district of Ontario, conducted April to June 1987 with the objective of capturing and estimating the population of brook trout from fish marked in the previous fall and winter. Fish were gill nets and trap nets. Results presented include catch by net type, brook trout age distribution, length and weight distribution, population estimates using the adjusted Petersen method, and stomach contents of brook trout.

Describes and presents results from a netting project on Megisan Lake in the Sault Ste. Marie district of Ontario, conducted in spring 1989 to determine population parameters and lake trout diet, and to determine relative abundance of fish species. Fish were captured using short-duration single-mesh gill nets, overnight multiple mesh gill nets, and trap nets. Results presented include catch by net type and by depth of net setting, lake trout age distribution, length and weight distribution, a population estimate using the adjusted Petersen method, and stomach contents of lake trout.

Index netting & mark-recapture programs are part of the regular assessment work schedules for several lakes. During the fall spawning period an effort is made to mark & release a portion of each trout population. Data from creels & index netting studies provides population estimates, angler exploitation rates & biological information for species of interest. Reliable population estimates, gear selectivity & natural mortality estimates require several years of data collection. The following goals were defined for Gong Lake during this project: population parameter estimates (size, growth, mortality); relative abundance of all fish species; gill net selectivity for lake trout; assess effectiveness of short-term gill net sets; homogeneity of fish populations with depth.

For undergraduate or graduate courses that include planning, conducting, and evaluating research. A do-it-yourself, understand-it-yourself manual designed to help students understand the fundamental structure of research and the methodical process that leads to valid, reliable results. Written in uncommonly engaging and elegant prose, this text guides the reader, step-by-step, from the selection of a problem, through the process of conducting authentic research, to the preparation of a completed report, with practical suggestions based on a solid theoretical framework and sound pedagogy. Suitable as the core text in any introductory research course or even for self-instruction, this text will show students two things: 1) that quality research demands planning and design; and, 2) how their own research projects can be executed effectively and professionally.
