"A refreshingly raw, contrasting perspective on the foolproof idea of motherhood." -- POPSUGAR "By turns painful and funny... A searingly candid memoir." -- Kirkus "Far from your cookie-cutter story of addiction . . . [I'm Just Happy to Be Here] describes Hanchett's journey to recovery and sobriety in imperfect and unconventional ways." -- Bustle In this unflinching and wickedly funny memoir, Janelle Hanchett tells the story of finding her way home. And then, actually staying there. Drawing us into the wild, heartbreaking mind of the addict, Hanchett carries us from motherhood at 21 with a man she'd known three months to cubicles and whiskey-laden domesticity, from judging meth addicts in rehab to therapists who "seem to pull diagnoses out of large, expensive hats." With warmth, wit, and searing B.S. detectors turned mostly toward herself, Hanchett invites us to laugh when we probably shouldn't and to rejoice at the unconventional redemption she finds in desperation and in a misfit mentor who forces her to see the truth of herself. A story of ego and forced humility, of fierce honesty and jagged love, of the kind of failure that forces us to re-create our lives, Hanchett writes with rare candor, scorching the "sanctity of motherhood," and leaving beauty in the ashes.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I was pregnant with my first child, and I smoked a cigarette on the balcony of our one-bedroom apartment. I had never been the type of person who wanted company in moments of vulnerability, so I was alone to deal with the situation. #2 I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend when I was eighteen, and I knew immediately that I would not have a baby. I felt relief, but also sadness. I did not feel guilty about that decision, though I suspected it made me a monster. #3 I remember a woman in my freshman comparative literature class who told me that getting an abortion is like getting your teeth cleaned. Her nonchalance convinced me that I would be fine, and that I was even perhaps not as foul as I had believed. #4 I was twenty-one and Mac was nineteen when we moved into our first apartment together. It was a small, plain apartment with yellowed linoleum floors and air conditioner box windows. It never felt like home, but we were kids in love, so we didn’t care.

For much of his thirties, Jesse Bering thought he was probably going to kill himself. He was a successful psychologist and writer, with books to his name and bylines in major magazines. But none of that mattered. The impulse to take his own life remained. At times it felt all but inescapable. Bering survived. And in addition to relief, the fading of his suicidal thoughts brought curiosity. Where had they come from? Would they return? Is the suicidal impulse found in other animals? Or is our vulnerability to suicide a uniquely human evolutionary development? In Suicidal, Bering answers all these questions and more, taking us through the science and psychology of suicide, revealing its cognitive secrets and the subtle tricks our minds play on us when we’re easy emotional prey. Scientific studies, personal stories, and remarkable cross-species comparisons come together to help readers critically analyze their own doomsday thoughts while gaining broad insight into a problem that, tragically, will most likely touch all of us at some point in our lives. But while the subject is certainly a heavy one, Bering’s touch is light. Having been through this himself, he knows that sometimes the most effective response to our darkest moments is a gentle humor, one that, while not denying the seriousness of suffering, at the same time acknowledges our complicated, flawed, and yet precious existence. Authoritative, accessible, personal, profound—there’s never been a book on suicide like this. It will help you understand yourself and your loved ones, and it will change the way you think about this most vexing of human problems.

"Becoming Mother" tells the story of a woman becoming a mother. It is a reflective memoir that spans from pregnancy through the end of the first year postpartum. It follows the author as she resists, denies, copes with, and ultimately embraces her identity as a mother. This isn't a guide or a parenting book. Its goal isn't to convert you to one brand of motherhood or another. Instead, its goal is to show you what becoming a mother can be like. Without sarcasm. Without boasting or martyrdom. Just the plain, messy truth of what it's like for one to become two.

The essential collection of critical essays from a twentieth-century master and author of 1984. As a critic, George Orwell cast a wide net. Equally at home discussing Charles Dickens and Charlie Chaplin, he moved back and forth across the porous borders between essay and journalism, high art and low. A frequent commentator on literature, language, film, and drama throughout his career, Orwell turned increasingly to the critical essay in the 1940s, when his most important experiences were behind him and some of his most incisive writing lay ahead. All Art Is Propaganda follows Orwell as he demonstrates in piece after piece how intent analysis of a work or body of work gives rise to trenchant aesthetic and philosophical commentary. With masterpieces such as "Politics and the English Language" and "Rudyard Kipling" and gems such as "Good Bad Books," here is an unrivaled education in, as George Packer puts it, "how to be interesting, line after line." With an Introduction from Keith Gessen.

A narrative told by the recently divorced Joelys Jeffries: a wildly impulsive woman who turns to sex work in order to support herself and her children. Facing her new reality after the dissolution of her marriage, her whole adult life spent as an at-home-mom and caregiver to her ailing mother, career options are limited. The story follows Joelys, Joe, as she tries tirelessly to recover from and process the major losses in her life while holding her family together. Joe is a little reckless, but funny and brave. In the first half of the book, the reader learns about her family history of alcoholism and her own struggles with mental illness coupled with identity issues stemming from being biracial. The conclusion allows the reader to watch Joe grow and heal in unexpected ways. The lightning-paced story is written in a way in which the reader feels as if she's Joelys' new best friend, getting all the raunchy, fun details as well as the raw, emotional hardships of her recovery from unimaginable loss. The novel oscillates between erotic adventures in her new career and single life and the real struggle of an uneducated woman trying to make ends meet. The story, set in the Pacific Northwest, contains sub-plots of ethical promiscuity, co-parenting, complex female friendships, Puerto Rican-American nationality, domestic violence, and typography. It might sound chaotic, but this novel is funny, touching, and thought-provoking.
