Research on salaries and compensation provided for law enforcement personnel in the United States. This study attempts to present current, relevant information and recommendations concerning major elements of problems involved in police compensation - the rapidly changing nature of law enforcement work, filling the right number of police jobs, at the right time, with qualified men, the necessity of determining police salaries and compensation separately to enable the development of professionalism within the police service. A major portion of the report refers to a comparison of the salaries paid to police officers and firemen. The report finds no basis for continuance of the custom of paying identical salaries to policemen and firemen, and recommends that compensation for police service be determined separately from fire service.
