Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... of art and logic."4 Like the French, the Japanese nation is too apt to embarrass itself with wording, logic, classification, simplicity, and comprehensiveness, in an attempt to form a code, no matter whether constitutional or statutory. In this respect the Japanese nation is far from resembling the English who have left the different parts of their constitution just where the wave of history had deposited them, having never attempted to bring them' together, to classify or complete them or to make a consistent and coherent whole. It should be remembered, however, that the resemblance of the Japanese constitution to the French is simply in form, and not in spirit. When we consider its spirit and fundamental principles, we can easily perceive that the one is as far separated from the other as the heavens are from the earth. 1 C/. the preface to Ito's Commentaries on japanese Constitution. The book covers the main developments in the social sciences after World War Two. Chapters on economics, human geography, political science, psychology, social anthropology, and sociology will interest anyone wanting short, accessible histories of those disciplines; they will also make it easy for readers to compare disciplines. A final chapter offers a blueprint for writing the history of the social sciences as a whole, drawing attention to the role of interdisciplinary work and to the importance of factors from the Second World War to the sixties and the fall of communism.
