Das Buch bietet exemplarisch historische, epigraphische und archäologische Untersuchungen unter anderem zu Truppenbewegungen, zu militärischen Anlagen und deren baulicher Entwicklung, zu Performanz und Engagement von militärischem und administrativem Personal und deren Familien, zur Präsenz von Veteranen in Siedlungen und ihren möglichen Einfluss auf Stadtentwicklungen, zum Engagement der Zentrale in Rom in diesem Raum, aber auch zu Infrastrukturmaßnahmen vor Ort. Zudem werden einige bisher unedierte Inschriften vorgelegt und Neulesungen präsentiert. Der Band ist der CIL-Autorin Miroslava Mirković (1933-2020) gewidmet und würdigt deren Forschungsschwerpunkte. Er präsentiert aktuelle Arbeiten und gibt Impulse für zukünftige Forschungen zu Pannonien und dessen Nachbarregionen.

The year of the four emperors in AD 193 shows the cosmopolitan interconnectedness of the Roman Empire, yet scholarship has long framed the Severan dynasty in a narrative of descent stressing their North African and in particular their Syrian origins. The contributions of this volume question this conventional approach and instead examine more closely actual Severan policy in the Near East to detect potential local connections that determined this policy as well as how local communities and elites reacted to it. The volume thus explores new beginnings and old connections in the Roman Near East.

Knjiga predstavlja nove elemente urbanističnih vidikov rimskih mest in manjših naselij na območju Caput Adriae, Norika in Panonije. V 26 prispevkih 54 avtorjev iz osmih držav (Italije, Slovenije, Avstrije, Madžarske, Hrvaške, Srbije, Črne gore in Severne Makedonije) poskuša razširiti védenje o razvoju mest in nekaterih drugih pomembnih naselij. Prva dva članka predstavljata širše, a različne poglede na urbanizacijo. V naslednjem delu je obravnavanih 22 naselij. Skrajni severovzhod X. regije predstavljajo štiri naselja (Aquileja, Tergeste, Emona in Nauport). V knjigo je vključena večina avtonomnih mest v Noriku ter nekatera druga naselbinska območja (Celeja, Flavia Solva, Virunum, Štalenska gora, Teurnija, Aguntum, Iuvavum, Ovilava, Lauriacum, Stein). Iz provinc Panonija Superior (Vindobona, Carnuntum, Strebersdorf, Savarija, Poetovio, Aquae Iasae) in Panonija Inferior (Mursa, Bassiane) so predstavljena izbrana mesta in manjša naselja. Območje se nahaja na stičišču med vzhodno in zahodno polovico cesarstva in zajema dele treh geografskih enot (tj. sredozemskega, alpskega in celinskega sveta), zaradi česar bi lahko bila knjiga zanimiva za širše razumevanje delovanja rimskega imperija.
