The book focuses on the pains and gains of international mobility in teacher education – its challenges and benefits. The aim is on the one hand to identify some of the challenges which help to explain the low percentage of internationally orientated teacher education students and suggest how to overcome them. On the other hand, major benefits of international mobility in teacher education are presented in the form of competences that can be acquired through studying and teaching abroad. The five chapters of this book refer to reports on practical experiences with international mobility in teacher education at different institutions. The authors outline problems, challenges and advantages, as well as present empirical studies on the international mobility of teachers. The target audience are persons organizing mobility programmes or educators working with international students and researchers in this field. This book aims to contribute to the promotion of international student teacher mobility and to give suggestions on how to implement and optimize such programmes.

Student mobility is an issue that affects school districts large and small across the nation. Schools can do very little to control the causes of mobility, but a great deal can be done to reduce the negative effects for mobile students through effective planning and consistent practices. Schools must focus on collaborative efforts to provide a welcoming environment for all families, assuring a positive transition for every student at any point during the school year. Mobility is rarely convenient or planned. Children are not in control of the choices that result in frequent school changes. Our job as educators is to help all students effectively transition into new schools, making connections with other students, staff members, and the community. In doing so, they are given the best chance of social and academic success for however long they are in our care.

This paper examines teachers' mobility in response to exogenous changes in the credentials of their students using data from Stockholm high schools. I explore a major admission reform that lead to the reshuffling of students between schools within the municipality of Stockholm. The results show that a 10-percentile-point increase in student quality decreases the probability of a separation by up to 9 percentage points. These effects are very similar across all types of teachers and are found mainly for mobility between schools rather than out of the profession. They are also present only in the lower half of the student quality distribution. Teachers react mostly to direct measures of student quality (grades from compulsory school) rather than to other characteristics that are correlated with student quality (immigrant status, parental income, paternal cognitive skills). Finally, I do not find any significant effects of changes in student quality on individual teacher's earnings or school hiring policies.

There are over 3 million public school teachers in the US, African American teachers only comprise approximately 8 percent of the workforce.
