'Mountains have given structure to my adult life. I suppose they have also given me purpose, though I still can't guess what that purpose might be. And although I have glimpsed the view from the mountaintop and I still have some memory of what direction life is meant to be going in, I usually lose sight of the wood for the trees. In other words, I, like most of us, have lived a life of structured chaos.' Structured Chaos is Victor Saunders' follow-up to Elusive Summits (winner of the Boardman Tasker Prize in 1990), No Place to Fall and Himalaya: The Tribulations of Vic & Mick. He reflects on his early childhood in Malaya and his first experiences of climbing as a student, and describes his progression from scaling canal-side walls in Camden to expeditions in the Himalaya and Karakoram. Following climbs on K2 and Nanga Parbat, he leaves his career as an architect and moves to Chamonix to become a mountain guide. He later makes the first ascent of Chamshen in the Saser Kangri massif, and reunites with old friend Mick Fowler to climb the north face of Sersank. This is not just a tale of mountaineering triumphs, but also an account of rescues, tragedies and failures. Telling his story with humour and warmth, Saunders spans the decades from youthful awkwardness to concerns about age-related forgetfulness, ranging from 'Where did I put my keys?' to 'Is this the right mountain?' Structured Chaos is a testament to the value of friendship and the things that really matter in life: being in the right place at the right time with the right people, and making the most of the view.

Domain structured dynamics introduces a way for analysis of chaos in fractals, neural networks and random processes. It starts with newly invented abstract similarity sets and maps, which are in the basis of the abstract similarity dynamics. Then a labeling procedure is designed to determine the domain structured dynamics. The results follow the Pythagorean doctrine, considering finite number of indices for the labeling, with potential to become universal in future. The immediate power of the approach for fractals as domains of chaos, revisited famous deterministic and stochastic models, new types of differential equations and neural networks is seen in the book. This is not considered through widening areas, where the notions can be seen and recognized, but by deepening abstraction. Key Features Provides the abstract similarity map, which generalizes the Bernoulli shift for abstract self-similar sets. Discusses dynamically generated self-similar sets as a method of chaos generation. Introduces abstract fractals as sets of metric spaces on the basis of abstract similar sets. Presents fractals concepts discussed through the newly introduced notions.

This is the first book-length study of William James' style, arguing that the manner in which James writes The Principles of Psychology and The Varieties of Religious Experience serves to construct a chaotic world for his readers. The book examines the uses of chaos in western literature and philosophy and reaches two conclusions: that chaos may be "utter confusion and disorder," but, paradoxically, that disorder is communicated through some particular order -- in Joyce's term, all chaos is "chaosmos." Secondly, what is essential about chaos is what it does: nothing is inherently chaotic, rather chaos is used to contrast with or challenge something that is more structured or formed. Finally, the author presents an examination of the religious function of James' chaotic worldview as a disorientation which orients.
