These proceedings focus on nanostructured and non-crystalline materials, including amorphous and multiphase systems, fine particles and granular systems, thin films, polymers and other disordered systems. The topics covered are: fabrication and processing techniques; relaxation, diffusive processes and molecular motions; structure and crystallization phenomena; electric and magnetic properties; and technological applications.

This proceedings volume contains research data on structural investigation of materials of high industrial value. In particular, the following issues are discussed: phase characterization by diffraction methods, application of direct methods for solving crystal structure from powder diffraction, electron crystallography, Rietveld method application, defects and substructure analysis in materials, new X-ray methods, small angle scattering studies of crystalline and amorphous solids, phase transformation studies including crystallography of the reversible martensitic transformation, structure of noncrystalline materials, structure and properties of new materials.

The automatic generation of parallel code from high level sequential description is of key importance to the wide spread use of high performance machine architectures. This text considers (in detail) the theory and practical realization of automatic mapping of algorithms generated from systems of uniform recurrence equations (do-lccps) onto fixed size architectures with defined communication primitives. Experimental results of the mapping scheme and its implementation are given.

Amorphous solids (including glassy and non-crystalline solids) are ubiquitous since the vast majority of solids naturally occurring in our world are amorphous. Although the field is diverse and complex, this three-volume set covers the vast majority of the important concepts needed to understand these materials and their principal practical applications. One volume discusses the most important subset of amorphous insulators, namely oxide glasses; the other two volumes discuss the most important subsets of amorphous semiconductors, namely tetrahedrally coordinated amorphous semiconductors and amorphous and glassy chalcogenides. Together these three volumes provide a comprehensive set of theoretical concepts and practical information needed to become conversant in the field of amorphous materials. They are suitable for advanced graduate students, postdoctoral research associates, and researchers wishing to change fields or sub-fields.The topics covered in these three volumes include (1) concepts for understanding the structures of amorphous materials, (2) techniques to characterize the structural, electronic, and optical properties of amorphous materials, (3) the roles of defects in affecting the electronic and optical properties of amorphous materials, and (4) the concepts for understanding practical devices and other applications of amorphous materials. Applications discussed in these volumes include transistors, solar cells, displays, bolometers, fibers, non-volatile memories, vidicons, photoresists, and optical disks.

Devices based on disordered semiconductors have wide applications. It is difficult to imagine modern life without printers and copiers, LCD monitors and TVs, optical disks, economical solar cells, and many other devices based on disordered semiconductors. These proceedings cover the lectures delivered at the Third International Summer College on Physics and Contemporary Needs held from June 17 - July 5, 1978 at Nathiagali, one of the scenic hill resorts in the northern part of Pakistan. The college was organized by The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and co-sponsored by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste (ICTP). It also received a financial grant by the University Grants Commission for the participation of physicists from various universities of Pakistan. The college was attended by 14 lecturers, 2 invited seminar speakers and 156 participants from 23 countries and consisted of 15 concen trated days of lectures, seminars and informal discussions. These proceedings contain only regular lectures delivered there, but the seminars which were held there are listed in the Appendix. This year the college put special emphasis on energy, parti cularly on nuclear energy and its role in the context of energy sys tems. However the lectures delivered at the college also covered a wide spectrum of physics. The lectures gave an overview of various topics covered at the college and emphasized the inter-disciplinary aspects of physics. Some of the lecturers also indicated the areas where research in developing countries with limited facilities could be carried out. The college had a definite objective of encouraging the physicists, part~cularly those working at the universities, to apply their knowledge of physics and methodology of research to the needs of modern society.
