The 'sedimentary cover' refers to the stratified rocks of youngest Proterozoic and Phanerozoic age that rest upon the largely crystalline basement rocks of the continental interior. Investigating the complex interplay between tectonics and sedimentation is a key endeavor in modern earth science.
