“Strange Roads is a small gem of travel literature in the tradition of works by John Van Dyke, Carl Lumholtz, Charles Lummus, Mary Austin, Edward Hoagland, and Bruce Chatwin. But for all its absorbing detail about topography, flora, and fauna, its keen observations of character, and its vivid re-creation of the sense of place, it is much more than a travel memoir. For on every page one senses the strength, character, and distinctive perspective of Mary del Villar herself. An uncommon woman by any standards, she seems all the more remarkable when one recalls the profoundly reactionary gender ideologies that prevailed in the postwar era in which she lived and wrote. Like other great female wanderers, she transcended the confining notions of woman her society would have imposed on her, living her life according to the dictates of her own intrepid spirit.” –From the foreword by Susan Hardy Aiken

For most of us, most of the time, the roads we travel are largely forgotten once we get to where we're going. By day, they usually reveal a familiar, real—living—world. But then darkness comes. Haunted Highways brings together more than twenty of the spookiest stories ever of ghosts, hauntings, and supernatural events on or near America's highways and byways. There are the usual suspects—the creepy hitchhiker, the eerie lights along a lonely stretch of road—as well as many you never dared to imagine. Each of the book's twenty-five chapters ratchets up the suspense, from an introduction that sets the scene and draws you in, to a haunting climax. Whether the actor Telly Savalas's haunting encounter with a long-dead good Samaritan on a rural Long Island road, or the Ghost Riders in the Sky who appear over the plains of Texas, these stories will bring delightful fright to readers young and old.

The Women’s Royal Naval Service was formed in 1917 when the call was for volunteers to release a man for sea service. At the peak there was over 5,000 women serving in Britain and overseas, but efforts to maintain the service in peace time were unsuccessful, and it was to be 1939, when the Second World War threatened, before the Wrens were reformed. Theirs was a different and altogether more demanding role which involved the carrying out of some highly secret and responsible duties, and many more of them served outside Britain. By 1945 there were over 75,000 officers and ratings and when the War ended, and those who wished were demobilized, a permanent Service was set up, providing a career for women alongside men of the Royal Navy. This is their story, often told in their own words, which mirrors the changing place of women in our society in a century of tremendous social progress.

One wrong turn changes everything... Strange Highways is a brilliant collection of dark and suspense-filled short stories from the international bestselling author Dean Koontz. Perfect for fans of Stephen King and Richard Laymon. One rain-swept Sunday night when he was twenty years old, on his way back to college after a weekend with his family, Joey Shannon took the wrong highway - and from that moment, nothing ever went right for him again. Now, exactly twenty years later, on another rain-swept night, Joey finds himself at the same crossroads, looking down the road never taken. Which is odd. Because that road no longer exists. A superhighway replaced it nearly twenty years ago, and the old state route - which had crossed a web of perpetually burning, abandoned coal mines - was condemned as too dangerous and was torn up. But now the highway is exactly as it was on that long-ago night, and when Joey turns on to it, he begins an eerie, terrifying journey toward a truth so dark and stunning that it will change everything he believes about himself, his past, and the nature of life... The first of thirteen short stories sets the pace for a thrilling read. What readers are saying about Strange Highways: 'One of the most thought provoking, terrifying yet enjoyable books I have ever read' 'Each story is as compelling and equally disturbing as the next' 'Great stories from when Dean Koontz was at the peak of his powers. There's suspense, horror, and a great atmosphere of something nasty lurking in the cubby holes of your mind'

If you want to wander the whole beautiful universe and then wander in the warm fierce veins of her heart, you will slave there forever. Perfect thought for the alchemist 'She' She wanted to change the hypocrisy thinking of the people. She wanted to shift the scenario of the whole society. She wanted to terminate the agony in her soul. She wanted to censure the discriminated thoughts of the entire world. From the Author S- She H- Heals E- Everything Faith is the substantial base of the relationship. A relationship never exists without trust; to continue the relationship without trust is just a compromise. A relationship is the colorful rainbow of trust, love, pain, emotions, compassion, beautiful eyes and a perfect sharp sword of madness hold by both of them tightly. She would become the cacophony for the society, under which the society will become deaf one day. Don't try judging her calibre; she is more innocent than nature but silently brutal for a cruel heart. She is responsible for everyone's life, but no one is ready to dedicate her own life" this is the real hypocrisy of our double-faced society. From the Inside Flap She was not raped, she was raped by the same society, which was wandering for her justice. This is the biggest hypocrisy we have ever seen. Why don't we understand this system? Why are we failing every day to create a perfect honourable society? Why are we trying changing others? She was not raped; instead, the society was raped for its hypocrisy and stereotypes. We are only creating echoes, infant negative echoes in the society; the voice of her is still burning with the bright candles. "We want change, but we resist changing." This is the fundamental problem of our society. Change yourself instead of changing others. There is a need for mental revolution to develop a new society which would be safe for her to live peacefully. "The society is only listening to the echoes of its voice, which has been creating every moment when we fight for her." She would appreciate the change, The change that can reshape the society the move which would end the evil souls of the community the change that will bring new sun to the horizon for her. "She is still waiting." From the Back Cover She is knotty for an indigence heart, lechery for the affluent men, irony for a selfish heart and mirth for an alchemist's heart. She is solitary in this crowded world, where no one is capable of listening to the heartbeat of her, thoughts of her, yelling voice of her.
