Storytelling from Boyhood and Beyond By: Jim Slater Storytelling from Boyhood and Beyond is a collection of stories relating to multiple generations of family: “a first trip from home,” “high school graduation,” “a letter from home when in Korea,” “engagement, marriage, and a lethal pancreatic cancer departure after fifty years.” Readers find themselves woven into a time they themselves lived through – or a time they were told about. Some stories invoke a chuckle or laughter – and yes, even tears.

This is the life of a born storyteller. From his small-town family that always stayed close to home, Bob Gibbons would eventually travel the country on corporate jets with CEOs, follow cowboys on a cattle drive in Wyoming, and, in a small airplane, chase alligators in the swamps south of New Orleans. He's arranged stars on Hollywood Boulevard and attended private movie premieres. He's worked with Disney Imagineers on a new theme park; he's spent an evening talking with Bob Newhart, won a short story writing contest, and written a movie that played in film festivals across the world. From all his adventures, he's returned with stories to tell-and they're in here-stories of the life he's led and the fun he's had beginning with the times he spent growing up on Oriole Street.

I do not intend to carry my story one month beyond the hour when I saw that my boyhood was gone and my youth arrived; a period determined to some by the first tail-coat, to me by a different sign. My reason for wishing to tell this first portion of my history is, that when I look back upon it, it seems to me not only so pleasant, but so full of meaning, that, if I can only tell it right, it must prove rather pleasant and not quite unmeaning to those who will read it. It will prove a very poor story to such as care only for stirring adventures, and like them all the better for a pretty strong infusion of the impossible; but those to whom their own history is interesting-to whom, young as they may be, it is a pleasant thing to be in the world-will not, I think, find the experience of a boy born in a very different position from that of most of them, yet as much a boy as any of them, wearisome because ordinary.

Glenn's memoir reflects on his childhood adventures as a little boy and his teenage years' mischievous activities while living in the small town of Amesbury, Ma. He shares his struggles as an adult with both humor and seriousness. Approaching the last few decades, he contemplates God's presence. The other observation is our ever-changing world, especially for the younger generations. The memoir includes not a year-by-year account of his life but only small pieces of his life's journey. His writing will inspire you to ruminate and share similar life experiences with family and loved ones. Lastly, consider that you can and should write your life.

This volume offers an overview of the rich narrative material circulating in the medieval Mediterranean. As a multilingual and multicultural zone, the Eastern Mediterranean offered a broad market for tales in both oral and written form and longer works of fiction, which were translated and reworked in order to meet the tastes and cultural expectations of new audiences, thus becoming common intellectual property of all the peoples around the Mediterranean shores. Among others, the volume examines for the first time popular eastern tales, such as Kalila and Dimna, Sindbad, Barlaam and Joasaph, and Arabic epics together with their Byzantine adaptations. Original Byzantine love romances, both learned and vernacular, are discussed together with their Persian counterparts and with later adaptations of western stories. This combination of such disparate narrative material aims to highlight both the wealth of medieval storytelling and the fundamental unity of the medieval Mediterranean world. Contributors are Carolina Cupane, Faustina Doufikar-Aerts, Massimo Fusillo, Corinne Jouanno, Grammatiki A. Karla, Bettina Krönung, Renata Lavagnini, Ulrich Moennig, Ingela Nilsson, Claudia Ott, Oliver Overwien, Panagiotis Roilos, Julia Rubanovich, Ida Toth, Robert Volk and Kostas Yiavis.
