Today's Stockton is a modern California city, home to a quarter of a million people. But few remember the details of its illustrious past. Influenced by strategic waterways and rich soil, Stockton attracted a succession of miners, farmers, shipbuilders, and industrial entrepreneurs. Throughout the years Stockton has evolved from a rough-and-tumble harbor town to an agricultural, business, and transportation center and has done so with a great amount of style and finesse. This collection of vintage postcards showcases Stockton's early days from 1900 to 1950, capturing the elegance and industry of a young city on the journey to the modern era. This book contains over 200 images of Stockton including the waterfront, paddlewheel steamers, beautiful hotels, graceful estates, sprawling farm vistas, and the ornate buildings of downtown.

Postcards are an important element of understanding our history, for they provide future generations with a rare glimpse into the past. Since the late 1800s, photographers have traveled around the nation to places such as San Antonio to capture scenes of everyday life and preserve them in this unique form. San Antonio began as a small mission village, a wild west frontier town, and starting point for huge cattle drives northward, and quickly grew into a bustling economic and cultural center for South Texas, luring residents and tourists with its colonial missions, diverse people, prominent military bases, long-standing traditions, and festive celebrations.

Since its 1848 beginning, Stockton has been a geographical and symbolic epicenter for prosperity and good fortune. Beginning as a Gold Rush-era supply depot, this city became the nexus of an agricultural empire and a center for industrial innovation with international markets.

Yosemite National Park is a place of extraordinary natural beauty with renowned waterfalls, spectacular granite rock formations, and serene meadows. Although indigenous peoples already inhabited Yosemite, settlers of European descent found their way there beginning in 1851. To serve the steady growth of tourists and visitors, lodging and accommodations have always been central to the park's history. The popularity of postcards starting in the early 1900s and lasting several decades coincided with the growth of the park's hotels and camps, transportation, and entertainment. This book of vintage postcards illustrates and chronicles those places and events. It provides visitors with an understanding and appreciation for the unique and diverse places made available to tourists throughout Yosemite's history.

When the twentieth century was young, visitors to Cape May knew exactly how to show the folks back home the attractions, accommodations, and ambiance of "the Nation's Oldest Seaside Resort": they sent a penny postcard. Publishers such as local entrepreneur Joseph K. Hand provided a vast choice of views, capturing white sands crowded with colorful tents and wool-suited bathers or beachfront hotels such as the Stockton, Lafayette, and Congress Hall. Popular postcards depicted amusement centers and nearby diversions: the Casino, Red Mill, Corinthian Yacht Club, Fun Factory, Convention Hall, and Cape May Point Lighthouse. Reprinted Victorian views of hotels destroyed by fire served as reminders of the resort's glory days. Real-photo cards chronicled newsworthy events including the creation of the harbor, construction of the huge Hotel Cape May, and the 1907 fire at the Iron Pier.

With the addition of luxury apartment buildings in the 1920s and the continued development of Main Street and Central Avenue, East Orange quickly became one of the largest and busiest cities in New Jersey.
