Limited Time Offer: Special NAUI Launch Promotion - Only $1.99 US (Regular MSRP $5.99 US) STEPSurface - the first book This first book, STEPSurface, is the starting point for a child’s journey into the underwater world. It will get them excited to explore and experience! The focus is on becoming comfortable and confident underwater, basic breathing and regulator skills, and calm behavior on the dive. These topics can be practiced at the surface to build up fundamental experience. It is perfect for young children, ages 6 and up, who are good swimmers and comfortable in the water. It starts an initial foundation for safe and enjoyable underwater excursions, building the comfort, confidence and behaviors to eventually progress to underwater skills and experience at an older age with the follow up book. Experience Before Depth: Where adventure begins, and learning never ends. Perfect for kids, but guaranteed fun for the whole family! EXPERIENCE BEFORE DEPTH - the training The books have been reviewed by NAUI, and align with corresponding training courses and certifications available on NAUI’s website. With practice, experience, and fun in shallow depths, kids and teens can seamlessly transition their newfound skills into natural behaviors and reactions underwater. As they grow and mature, they can progress year-over-year to deeper dives and lay a foundation of experience to take onto their SCUBA certification at an older age. EXPERIENCE BEFORE DEPTH - the series The Experience Before Depth books are a perfect blend of adventure, education, and safety, making it a must-have training companion and guide for all kids and teens who love diving, and their parents. With a dynamic and playful approach, young divers are inspired and encouraged to focus on safety and mastery of skills. The books are expertly written, with colorful illustrations and pictures and easy-to-understand texts. Interactive links add an extra dimension, bringing the content to life with engaging video clips. Practical hints and hands-on learning make it easy to grasp the fundamentals in a playful way. Rather than learning everything at once, each book covers a specific, age-appropriate selection of content from the many topics and materials of a traditional Junior Open Water Dive course. The same SCUBA skills and techniques are explained in easy language, introducing them gradually in extremely shallow water environments. Young divers can progress through them over time, at their own pace, building confidence and competence over time. Designed for enjoyment and learning, these books are perfect for SCUBA-certified parents to read together with their aspiring young divers, creating a bonding experience and reinforcing fundamental safety and behavioral skills.

This book provides a clear and understandable text for users and developers of advanced engineered materials, particularly in the area of thin films, and addresses fundamentals of modifying the optical, electrical, photo-electric, triboligical, and corrosion resistance of solid surfaces and adding functionality to solids by engineering their surface, structure, and electronic, magnetic and optical structure. Thin film applications are emphasized. Through the inclusion of multiple clear examples of the technologies, how to use them, and the synthesis processes involved, the reader will gain a deep understanding of the purpose, goals, and methodology of surface engineering and engineered materials. Virtually every advance in thin film, energy, medical, tribological materials technologies has resulted from surface engineering and engineered materials. Surface engineering involves structures and compositions not found naturally in solids and is used to modify the surface properties of solids and involves application of thin film coatings, surface functionalization and activation, and plasma treatment. Engineered materials are the future of thin film technology. Engineered structures such as superlattices, nanolaminates, nanotubes, nanocomposites, smart materials, photonic bandgap materials, metamaterials, molecularly doped polymers and structured materials all have the capacity to expand and increase the functionality of thin films and coatings used in a variety of applications and provide new applications. New advanced deposition processes and hybrid processes are being used and developed to deposit advanced thin film materials and structures not possible with conventional techniques a decade ago. Properties can now be engineered into thin films that achieve performance not possible a decade ago.

This book provides a description of the generalized two layer surface complexation model, data treatment procedures, and thermodynamic constants for sorption of metal cations and anions on gibbsite, the most common form of aluminum oxide found in nature and one of the most abundant minerals in soils, sediments, and natural waters. The book provides a synopsis of aluminum oxide forms and a clearly defined nomenclature. Compilations of available data for sorption of metal cations and anions on gibbsite are presented, and the results of surface complexation model fitting of these data are given. The consistency of the thermodynamic surface complexation constants extracted from the data is examined through development of linear free energy relationships which are also used to predict thermodynamic constants for ions for which insufficient data are available to extract constants. The book concludes with a comparison of constants extracted from data for sorption on gibbsite with those determined previously for hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), hydrous manganese oxide (HMO), and goethite. The overall objective of this book is the development and presentation of an internally consistent thermodynamic database for sorption of inorganic cations and anions on gibbsite, an abundant and reactive mineral in soils, sediments, and aquatic systems. Its surface has a high affinity for sorption of metal cations and anions, including radionuclides. The gibbsite database will enable simulation and prediction of the influence of sorption on the fate of these chemical species in natural systems and treatment processes in which aluminum oxides are abundant. It thus will help to advance the practical application of surface complexation modeling.

The interest in the problem of surface diffusion has been steadily growing over the last fifteen years. This is clearly evident from the increase in the number of papers dealing with the problem, the development of new experimental techniques, and the specialized sessions focusing on diffusion in national and international meetings. Part of the driving force behind this increasing activity is our recently acquired ability to observe and possibly control atomic scale phenomena. It is now possible to look selectively at individual atomistic processes and to determine their relative importance during growth and reactions at surfaces. The number of researchers interested in this problem also has been growing steadily which generates the need for a good reference source to farniliarize newcomers to the problem. While the recent emphasis is on the role of diffusion during growth, there is also continuing progress on the more traditional aspects of the problem describing mass transport in an ensemble of particles. Such a description is based on the statistical mechanical analysis of a collection of particles that mutually interact and develop correlations. An average over the multitude of atomistic processes that operate under these conditions is necessary to fully describe the dynamics in the system.

The objective in initiating this series in 1980 was to provide an in-depth review of advances made in the understanding key aspects of surface chemistry and physics through the application of new techniques to the study of well-defined surfaces. Since then the field of surface science has greatly matured, and further important techniques, particularly scanning probe microscopies, have been successfully assimilated into the applications armoury of the surface scientist. The present volume is a series of timely reviews by many of the current experts in the field of phase transitions and adsorbate-induced surface restructuring. No aspect of the science of solid surfaces can be fully understood without accounting for the structural diversity of surfaces, now revealed in atomic detail by techniques based on diffraction and scanning probe microscopies. For example, it is now clear to those working in heterogeneous catalysis that adsorbate-induced restructuring of surfaces can play a critical role in phenomena such as bistability, kinetic oscillations, and promotion and poisoning. Structural transitions at surfaces can also play a key role in determining the electronic properties of surfaces, reviewed in volume 5.

A tutorial treatment of the main concepts of the physics of crystal surfaces. Emphasis is placed on simplified calculations and the corresponding detailed analytical derivations, that are able to throw light on the most important physical mechanisms. More rigorous techniques, which often require a large amount of computer time, are also explained. Wherever possible, the theory is compared to practice, with the experimental methods being described from a theoretical rather than a technical viewpoint. The topics treated include thermodynamic and statistical properties of clean and adsorbate-covered surfaces, atomic structure, vibrational properties, electronic structure, and the theory of physisorption and chemisorption. The whole is rounded off with new excercises.
