Transplantation of bone marrow from one sibling to another who is ill with a blood cancer (such as Leukemia) is a life-saving therapy. Young children however are not in a position to give consent themselves. How should they be adequately included, depending to their age? Which ethical questions are raised for the parents both at the time of treatment and afterwards, and for the medical professionals in clinical and regulatory contexts? For an in-depth discussion of the findings the books brings together a group of leading scholars from the fields of bioethics, family sociology and philosophy of medicine.

A qualitative phenomenological study using van Manen's human science method was conducted to gain insight into the lived experience of patients and their family members transitioning through one hundred days post haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Three families between zero and five years post HSCT were recruited from a bone marrow transplant unit in central Canada. Multiple in-depth open-ended interviews and field notes were employed to arrive at a detailed description of the lived experience of patients and family members. Awakening from the cocoon emerged as the main essence of patient's and family members' experiences, supported by three themes: the disruptions, the chrysalis, and new beginnings. The results from this study provide evidence that the families viewed the HSCT in a positive perspective and highlight the importance of supporting families throughout the acute phase of transplantation.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has become an effective treatment for many pediatric patients who have medical conditions, acquired or genetic. The HSCT procedure is often performed as part of therapy to eliminate a bone marrow infiltrative process, such as leukemia, or to correct congenital immunodeficiency disorders. The HSCT is a demanding process that creates both physical and emotional challenges for both the patients and their families, including the siblings. Research has demonstrated the negative, psychosocial impact of the HSCT on both donor and non-donor siblings. This study examined psychosocial changes associated with participation in art therapy interventions for siblings of pediatric HSCT patients. Results showed an improvement in sibling and family psychosocial functioning that were associated with the participation in the art therapy interventions. Compared to a baseline comparison group, the intervention group showed improvements in family functioning and decreasing levels of PTSD. Results also show that longer length of hospitalization and allogeneic sibling donation, were associated with higher levels of PTSD in the siblings of pediatric HSCT patients.

Organ transplantation is a medical innovation that has offered the potential to enhance and save lives since the first successful procedure in the 1950s. Subsequent developments in scientific knowledge and advances in surgical techniques have allowed for more efficient and refined procurement, minimal surgical complications, and increased success rate. However, procedures such as organ transplantation raise questions about the nature of our relationship with our own bodies; about our embodiment and personal and corporeal identity. This book is comprised of academic essays, personal reflections, and creative writing from researchers and artists involved in an ongoing collaborative art-science project about the experience and culture of heart transplantation. The writings and reflections included discuss embodiment, what it means to inhabit a body and define oneself in relation to it, including struggles with identity formation; set in both clinical and private spaces. The uniqueness of this volume consists in the authors’ aim of connecting the specific experience of heart transplantation to the more widely shared experience of relating to the world and one another through the body’s physical, perceived, and imagined boundaries. Such boundaries and the commonly held beliefs in personal autonomy that are associated with them are a subject of ongoing philosophical and scientific debate. What’s more, the resources of art and culture, including popular culture, literature, historical and contemporary art, are extremely useful in revising our views of what it means for the body’s boundaries to be philosophically ‘leaky.’ Following the discussion initiated by contributor Margrit Shildrick, this book contributes to the field of inquiry of the phenomenon of embodiment and inter-corporeality, the growing body of literature emerging from collaborative art-science research projects, and the wider area of disability studies. This book will be of particular interest to those with personal, scholarly, and creative interests in the experience of transplantation, or illness in general.
