The second installment of politically charged satire, scrutiny, and social commentary from John Yates' Stealworks graphics compound. Whereas his first anthology of work, Stealworks, was a retrospective that gathered together in a single archival collection previously published material, this latest edition comprises an entirely unpublished selection of incendiary graphics. Featuring over 100 of Yates' designs, September Commando is a visual assault on all things bad. From our benevolent leaders on "Capitol(ist) Hill" to "Twenty First Century Cops," from his "own" apathy-embracing "(de)Generation X" to the selling of "Corporate American" ignorance (and purchase thereof) to the (pocket) enlightened m(asses). Think of it as Barbara Kruger on a social injustice killing spree.

Chosen by the Editors at Amazon.com as one of the top 50 Best Books of 2005 - Now in paperback! With the world's economy in a slump, the Middle East's never ending conflict, and the on-going war on terrorism, there is a heightened awareness in the world community of the many sides of the numerous issues that both directly and indirectly affect our lives. Increasingly, people are feeling powerless and underrepresented because they have no voice. Designers, however, have a voice. They are among the most influential bystanders because their skills enable them to communicate a message easily through the Web or through posters and printed pieces. A picture is worth a thousand words and designers have used this adage to their advantage for years by creating simple yet powerful designs that immediately convey the message to the viewer. The Design of Dissent focuses on graphic work that designers have made as a result of social and political concerns. The time is certainly ripe as the U.S., and world, flares in opposition on so many important issues.

The Design of Dissent is a global collection of socially and politically driven graphics on issues including Black Lives Matter, Trump protests, refugee crises, and the environment. Dissent is an essential part of keeping democratic societies healthy, and our ability as citizens to voice our opinions is not only our privilege, it is our responsibility. Most importantly, it is a human right, one which must be fervently fought for, protected, and defended. Many of the issues and conflicts visited in the first edition of this book remain vividly present today, as simmering, sometimes throbbing reminders of how the work of democracy and pace of social change is often incremental, requiring patience, diligence, hope, and the continuing brave voices of designers whose skillful imagery emboldens, invigorates, and girds us in the face of struggle. The 160+ new works in this edition document the Arab Spring, the Obama presidency, Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, the election of Donald Trump, Putin's continuing influence, the Women's March, the ongoing refugee crises, immigration, environment and humanitarian issues, and much more. This powerful collection, totaling well over 550 images, stands not only as a testament to the power of design but as an urgent call to action.

Forced to flee by the Bolsheviks, he eventually ended up in exile in Paris. Marginalized and impoverished, in poor health as a result of wounds sustained in fighting against the Whites and the Bolsheviks, and time spent in prisons inside tsarist Russia before the Revolution and in Eastern European prisons en route to exile afterwards, Nestor Makhno wrote occasional essays in self-vindication and in vindication of the peasant insurgent movement that bore his name.

Donald Trump is hated on the Left, but we owe him thanks for accomplishing what no other president has ever accomplished. He has brought into the bright light of day for the first time a quasi-fascist movement in the United States, the roiling ugliness known as the Amerikaner Trumpenvolk. One of the principle locations for quasi-fascist and fascist organizing in the United States in the last five years has been Portland, OR. Notably, local fascist and white nationalist groups have forged alliances with far right conservatives, members of the GOP, patriot militia members, Proud Boys, and extremist Christian groups like Patriot Prayer. When these clowns show up in public they mean to intimidate, they mean to spread violence, and they mean to recruit new members. They also make spectacles of themselves, which, thankfully, Jeff Schwilk is there to document. These candid, unflattering, moments captured by Schwilk allow us to gaze at these monsters not how they'd like us to see them, but in a pathetic light of their own making. Thirty photos are paired with essays skewering these Trumpenvolk, adding up to an entertaining, unique, and powerful indictment of the hate groups and haters operating in the U.S. today.
