This statistical analysis report from the National Center for Education Statistics examines the current state of school libraries in the United States and how they have changed. The primary source of data in this report is the 1993-94 Library Survey, the first federally sponsored survey of library media centers and head librarians in elementary and secondary schools. The data taken from the 1993-94 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) are compared with historical data from previous surveys. Results, in tables and charts, are divided into two sections. The first section gives a background on school library media centers and results are presented in terms of growth in school library media centers, library media center staffing, expenditures, collections and resource evaluation, technology and equipment, and scheduling and transactions. The second section focuses on school head librarians, and provides results in current status, background and experience, training, collaborative activities, perception and attitude toward work, compensation, and number of FTE positions. Appendices include detailed tables, and technical notes focusing on survey content, target populations and estimates, sample design and implementation, data collection procedures, response rates, edit procedures, imputation, weighting, and definitions. This document, consisting of 7 chapters, 34 figures, 412 tables, plus 20 appended tables, provides statistical data on most aspects of U.S. education, both public and private, from kindergarten through graduate school. The chapters cover the following topics: (1) "All Levels of Education"; (2) "Elementary and Secondary Education"; (3) "Postsecondary Education" which include college and university education as well as vocational and adult education; (4) "Federal Programs for Education and Related Activities"; (5) "Outcomes of Education"; (6) "International Comparisons of "Education"; and (7) "Learning Resources and Technology." The publication contains information on a variety of subjects including the number of schools and colleges, teachers, enrollments, and graduates, in addition to educational attainment, finances, federal funds for education, employment and income of graduates, libraries, and international education. Supplemental information on population trends, attitudes on education, education characteristics of the labor force, government finances, and economic trends provides background for evaluating education data. Included among data not appearing in previous editions are the following: teachers' opinions on the education system; financial statistics of urban, suburban, and rural school districts; plans and activities of high school sophomores; public elementary and secondary school expenditures, by function and state; and international literacy and geography achievements of students. A short introduction provides a brief overview of current trends in American education, and each chapter highlights significant trends. Guides to tabular presentations and sources are provided along with definitions and an index. (MLF)
