The State and Metropolitan Area Data Book is the continuation of the U.S. Census Bureau’s discontinued publication. It is a convenient summary of statistics on the social and economic structure of the states, metropolitan areas, and micropolitan areas in the United States. It is designed to serve as a statistical reference and guide to other data publications and sources. This new edition features more than 1,500 data items from a variety of sources. The Statistical Abstract of the United States, published since 1878, is the standard summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. It is designed to serve as a convenient volume for statistical reference and as a guide to other statistical publications and sources. The latter function is served by the introductory text to each section, the source note appearing below each table, and Appendix I, which comprises the Guide to Sources of Statistics, the Guide to State Statistical Abstracts, and the Guide to Foreign Statistical Abstracts.

1979-2010: Contains data similar to that found in the County and City Databook, but on the state and MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Areas) levels.

Evaluates more than four hundred metropolitan areas in the United States and Canada, rating such factors as job market, housing costs, crime rates, climate, health care, education, and quality of life.
