The town of St. Helena lies in the heart of Napa Valley, Americas celebrated wine-producing region located 63 miles north of San Francisco. In 1854, Henry Still and a Mr. Walters purchased 126 acres from the Mexican land grant of Dr. Edward Bale. They offered free lots to anyone who would start a business there, having the foresight to predict a flourishing town in this verdant agricultural area. Premium wine grapes were planted here by the 1870s, and a thriving wine industry began. There are two theories about how the town got its name: either from the local division of the Sons of Temperance or from Mount St. Helena at the northern end of the valley. As the town developed, its residents, along with those from nearby Oakville, Rutherford, Angwin, and Pope Valley, shopped at its stores, attended its churches and schools, tended its fields, and made merry at numerous gatherings. This book captures these activities in photographs dating from 1880 to 1960.

Saint Helena is an isolated volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 1,200 miles west of the coast of Africa. The island was discovered by the Portuguese in 1502 and was later occupied by the British in 1659, becoming an important British outpost during the 19th century. Saint Helena is known for being the final resting place of the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled on the island from 1815 until his death in 1821. Today, the island is a British Overseas Territory with a population of approximately 4,000 inhabitants. Despite its remote location, Saint Helena has a rich history and culture. The island's isolation has contributed to the development of a distinct culture and language known as "Saints English", which is a mixture of English, Portuguese, and African dialects. In addition to Napoleon's tomb, the island is also home to a number of historic landmarks, including the Jacob's Ladder staircase, which has 699 steps, and the 16th century Plantation House, which serves as the residence of the island's governor. Today, Saint Helena's economy is largely dependent on tourism, as visitors come to explore the island's natural beauty and rich history.

Excerpt from St. Helena: The Historic Island, From Its Discovery to the Present Date These early navigators, always on the outlook to find islands which they could use as watering places for their vessels, and which would generally supply them with vegetables, meat, and fruit, were eager to stock and colonize them. On the occasion of the discovery of St. Helena, we find they were prepared, for they left at the island some goats, asses, and pigs; but at this visit there is no mention of colonization. Eleven years after, a Portuguese fleet called on its way home from India, and left here the first human inhabitant. He was Fernandez Lopez, a noble man who, having incurred disgrace through desertion, was condemned, and punished to the extent of having his nose, ears, right hand and the little finger of the left hand cut Off. We can well imagine he preferred to be left here, rather than to endure the reproach and ignominy which awaited him at home. Thus, he was the first Governor of St. Helena, and, according to the records, was provided with a few negro slaves, pigs, goats, poultry, partridges, guinea-fowl, phea sants, peacocks, vegetables, roots, fig, orange and peach trees. (it is a mystery how the small vessels of that date were able to keep on board all these animals, poultry, and food.) Here he Spent four years, being then recalled by Portugal.
