He represented Queen Victoria at the coronation of the 'czar in 1896, opened the great Assouan Dam in Egypt in 1902, and represented King Edward VII. At the coronation Durbar at Delhi in 1903. He was chosen in 1910 to open the first Union Parliament of South Africa, a division of the Empire containing between five and six millions, of whom are white.
