Excerpt from St. Andrew's College Review, Christmas 1913 On entering the Upper School be devoted himself at first to Classics and made good progress in the study of Latin and Greek In the latter he exhibited a capacity for languages which would have enabled him to win distinction in this department. His success in languages is the more remarkable because his real choice was science, and to this subject, together with mathematics, he devoted himself during his last year at St. Andrew's. Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review: Easter, 1913 Red tied his pony to the ancient hitching - post, and with a feel ing almost of desecration, pushed aside the creaking portal. A pile of damp leaves lay upon the oor of the entrance-hall and some had blown into the huge and lofty drawing-room. In the fireplace were sodden ashes, the betrayed ghosts of some tramps' orgy. The explorer peered into the cellar, but a whiff of damp, noxious air drove him into the more cheerful hall. One by one he examined the rooms on the ground oor, then mounted the creaking stairs. A rat scurried across the boards and a spider's web trailed its silken mesh over his face. Nothing of particular interest claimed a perusal of the sunlit chambers, so he mounted a second ight of dustv steps and found several rooms of goodly size in the upper story. They were absolutely empty, with the exception of one. Which contained a tottering four-poster, to which clung fragments of faded green hangings. A sudden movement caused him to bang the door as he peered with suppressed excite ment at the rickety piece of furniture. On the uneven. Weather smirched mattress a black cat of immense size rolled in an ecstacy of sociability. Digging its claws into the ticking and twisting its handsome bodv in a series of bewildering contortions. Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review: Midsummer, 1913 Sinclair's father gave to him a cheque for one thousand pounds, to set him up in whatever career he should decide to follow. This sum Jack could invest as he thought best, but he was always to remember that it was all he could expect from home, and to regulate his living and investments accordingly. Now let it be known that Jack Sinclair was entirely reckless, be this to his credit or no, and believed greatly in the throw of a dice, on his luck at cards, or on the merits of a horse. Knowing this, it is not surprising that he was foolish enough to risk all his assets on the ponies at the Epsom Derby. It was to be his first lesson on youthful folly, and probably it was as well he lost everything. He bore his loss like a true-blooded sportsman. Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review, 1910-1913 What lines of an immortal Browning or a despised Virgil can equal this famous classic? There is music in every foot of each verse, and to many eager ears it is the music of Home, Sweet Home. To all those whose steps are speeding in the direction of sweet home, and to. All whose thoughts only are bearing them closer to a charmed circle, where their presence will be sadly missed, the review extends heartiest greetings and best wishes for a truly happy vacation. It is the gladdest time of the whole year for most of us, but to a great many it is, unfortunately, the saddest. It is now that the empty chair seems most vacant, the hushed voice most still, and to all who feel anew at this time the sorrow of bereavement, the sense of eternal loss, we wish the deeper happi ness that comes from a true realization of what the season really brings to all - Peace on Earth, Good-will towards Men. Excerpt from The St. Andrew's College Review: Christmas, 1917 There is an element in most men which gives them a feeling of peculiar attachment for that which they possess in common with others. Companionship possessions, if one may be permitted to use the expression, invariably create in men worth while a feeling of regard, which naturally develops into affection and loyalty. Are not the individuals home town, his home province, his native country, more to him than all others of their kind? The average boy knows his school is the best. He shares with pride in her scholastic honours, helps to produce her athletic victories, and enjoys satisfaction and honour in the achievements of her "old boys." To endeavour to account for the existence of this element in the character of most men is not within the purpose of this article. Suffice it to say that its existence is one of the finer facts of human nature, and, that it is one of the most commendable characteristics of schoolboy nature, that the average boy is loyal to those possessions which he enjoys in company with his fellows, of which possessions his school life should be by no means the least. The expression, school loyalty, probably has meaning for us, though the word "loyalty" is frequently used somewhat loosely. As related to school life we have no English word to convey just what is meant. The French call it "esprit de corps," and this expression is not unknown in the school life of our Anglo-Saxon world. However, when speaking to the Canadian boy of loyalty to his school, one likes to think of the word "loyalty" as akin in meaning to faithfulness, which in turn means the condition of being full of faith. The loyal boy is, himself, full of faith in his school and in turn is filled with the faith which his school has in him. For there is undoubtedly a mutual exchange of benefit in school loyalty.
