Tension in sport can occur at any level and is not simply confined to encounters or occasions when the ultimate or top skills are on display, although many, if not all, of the events chosen in this book do indeed feature extremely high skill levels. Perhaps the most obvious ingredient of tension is uncertainty, where the outcome is unknown throughout the majority or even all of the proceedings as the drama develops and reaches its peak. After all, how many times do you hear people say that they prefer to watch something live rather than watch it later in the day when it is repeated? Clearly, if you watch the same sporting event repeatedly it is most probably because you have enjoyed the outcome, all the tension having disappeared. At the height of tension the outcome is completely unknown until the very final seconds or even second.

The book is designed to provide a flowing description of the physiology of heat stress, the illnesses associated with heat exposure, recommendations on optimising health and performance, and an examination of Olympic sports played in potentially hot environmental conditions. In the first section the book examines how heat stress effects performance by outlining the basics of thermoregulation and how these responses impact on cardiovascular, central nervous system, and skeletal muscle function. It also outlines the pathophysiology and treatment of exertional heat illness, as well as the role of hydration status during exercise in the heat. Thereafter, countermeasures (e.g. cooling and heat acclimation) are covered and an explanation as to how they may aid in decreasing the incidence of heat illness and minimise the impairment in performance is provided. A novel and particular feature of the book is its inclusion of sport-specific chapters in which the influence of heat stress on performance and health is described, as well as strategies and policies adopted by the governing bodies in trying to offset the deleterious role of thermal strain. Given the breadth and scope of the sections, the book will be a reference guide for clinicians, practitioners, coaches, athletes, researchers, and students.

Games and Sporting Events in History offers a broad global perspective on sports and games in Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. A diverse set of topics covers education, medicine, therapy, body culture, gender, race, cross cultural flow, and political issues from the late nineteenth century throughout the twentieth century, offering new insights into previously little researched areas of scholarship relating to physical activity and sport. Such works take a new look at old issues with continued relevance to current works. The use of sports as a political tool are prominent in studies persistent to national and international relations; while other investigations cover the sociocultural discourse of the past relative to bodies and physical performances that continue to resonate in modern times. This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Bringing together concepts from psychoanalysis with an attentive eye and the author's popular wisdom, Sports on the Couch explores the psychology of athletes and those around them. As a product of our culture, sport enables a break for our minds, since it allows us to disconnect from internal as well as external realities. We immerse ourselves in the world of play, managing to let out tensions and liberate a great deal of aggression in a socially acceptable way.
