Excerpt from Speeches, Arguments, and Miscellaneous Papers of David Dudley Field, Vol. 3 David Dudley Field was born in 1805 in Connecticut and died in New York City in 1894, having achieved in his lifetime the honor of being known as "The Father of United States legal reform." He spent his whole life campaigning to bring about codification of common-law procedure in New York State. While the codification was never completely adopted in New York, the codes that he worked on were extensively adopted in many other States and other countries. His arguments for codifying common-law procedure were published in a pamphlet entitled The Reorganization of the Judiciary. This pamphlet was instrumental in persuading the New York Constitutional Convention of 1847 to favorably consider a codification of the law. In an 1894 article written on the occasion of Field's death, the author admiringly stated that "his work will never be forgotten because it forms a conspicuous part of the progress of man himself toward that intelligent regulation of life which is the object of all law." The author goes on to say that "the admirable qualifications of Mr. Field for the great tasks which he accomplished would not have been complete without his advanced conception of the law itself. He was not a case lawyer. He appeared to survey law in the direct relation which the whole and each part bears to public welfare." Ho had proceeded beyond the half of the second volume, when the work was interrupted by his sudden death. The loss was a severe one, for he was a young man of much promise, and had distinguished himself by winning the prize offered by M. Marcuarto, of Spain, through the Association for the Reform and Codification of the Law of Nations, for the best essay upon the codification of public International Law. His death interrupted for a time the completion of the present work. It was his intention to insert a preliminary essay, but the materials were not sufficiently collected and arranged to be of use in other hands. The selections for these volumes have been made from a largo mass of material, and they sufficiently explain themselves. Many of the controversies to which the papers relate have been settled by time and circumstance; but it was thought that the republication might serve a useful purpose, by way of suggestion at least, toward a history of opinion and struggle, in periods of great importance.
