Response of the Ohio Secretary of State to a resolution of the Senate requesting information on stationery purchased for the use of the General Assembly. The Secretary of State sent a copy of a report prepared for the House, which is dated December 16, 1843. The report includes background information which indicates that paper produced in Ohio was found to be of unsatisfactory quality, and that paper was purchased from New York City. The report includes a tabular statement showing the cost of paper purchased in New York City, which includes the articles of stationery (including sealing wax, quills, India rubber, pens, pen holders, penknives, letter paper, etc.), the cost, the cost paid by the former Secretary of State, and the amount saved by the state. On the matter, the Secretary of State indicates "there has appeared a strange disposition to give to it an unusual degree of importance" (page 5), and explains this point of view. The report is signed by J. Sloane, Secretary of State.
