Perceptual Organization for Artificial Vision Systems is an edited collection of invited contributions based on papers presented at The Workshop on Perceptual Organization in Computer Vision, held in Corfu, Greece, in September 1999. The theme of the workshop was `Assessing the State of the Community and Charting New Research Directions.' Perceptual organization can be defined as the ability to impose structural regularity on sensory data, so as to group sensory primitives arising from a common underlying cause. This book explores new models, theories, and algorithms for perceptual organization. Perceptual Organization for Artificial Vision Systems includes contributions by the world's leading researchers in the field. It explores new models, theories, and algorithms for perceptual organization, as well as demonstrates the means for bringing research results and theoretical principles to fruition in the construction of computer vision systems. The focus of this collection is on the design of artificial vision systems. The chapters comprise contributions from researchers in both computer vision and human vision.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference, Diagrams 2004, held in Cambridge, UK, in March 2004. The 18 revised full papers and 42 revised poster papers presented together with a survey article and the abstracts of 2 posters were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 91 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on fundamental issues, logical aspects of diagrammatic representation and reasoning, computational aspects of diagrammatic representation and reasoning, cognitive aspects of diagrammatic representation and reasoning, visualizing information with diagrams, diagrams in human-computer interaction, and diagrams in software engineering.

A principal challenge for both biological and machine vision systems is to integrate and organize the diversity of cues received from the environment into the coherent global representations we experience and require to make good decisions and take effective actions. Early psychological investigations date back more than 100 years to the seminal work of the Gestalt school. Yet in the last 50 years, neuroscientific and computational approaches to understanding perceptual organization have become equally important, and a full understanding requires integration of all three approaches. This highly interdisciplinary Research Topic welcomes contributions spanning Computer Science, Psychology, and Neuroscience, with the aim of presenting a single, unified collection that will encourage integration and cross-fertilization across disciplines.

With the recent and enormous increase in the amount of available data sets of all kinds, applying effective and efficient techniques for analyzing and extracting information from that data has become a crucial task. Computer Vision has now reached a level of maturity that allows us not only to perform research on individual methods but also to build fully integrated computer vision systems of a signi cant complexity. This opens up a number of new problems related to architectures, systems integration, validation of - stems using benchmarking techniques, and so on. So far, the majority of vision conferences have focused on component technologies, which has motivated the organization of the First International Conference on Computer Vision Systems (ICVS). It is our hope that the conference will allow us not only to see a number of interesting new vision techniques and systems but hopefully also to de ne the research issues that need to be addressed to pave the way for more wide-scale use of computer vision in a diverse set of real-world applications. ICVS is organized as a single-track conference consisting of high-quality, p- viously unpublished, contributed papers on new and original research on c- puter vision systems. All contributions will be presented orally. A total of 65 papers were submitted for consideration by the conference. All papers were - viewed by three reviewers from the program committee. Thirty-two of the papers were selected for presentation. ICVS’99 is being held at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and Convention Centre, in Las Palmas, on the lovely Canary Islands, Spain. The setting is spri- like, which seems only appropriate as the basis for a new conference.
