South Africa's Mobility Report: Tracking Sector Performance present a high-level diagnostic of South Africa's transport and mobility system. This diagnostic takes a systemic approach, covering all modes of transportation, passenger and freight, infrastructure, and services.

Our world is changing fast. Countries’ transport systems, which have long been shaped by project-by-project considerations, must help achieve higher-level goals for the well-being of mankind, as embodied by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. New forces impose greater effectiveness in the way public choices are made, such as making better use of data and technologies, adopting a more inclusive and participatory approach to decision making, and addressing social concerns about equity. Transport practitioners and country decision-makers have been looking for structured and coherent guidance about ways to adjust to these new dynamics and change the trajectory of transport system. This book examines the rationale for and details an innovative approach for public decision-making to expedite the pace to sustainable mobility.

This book provides a collection of insightful conceptual and empirical works that situate transport and mobility challenges in the unique context of individual countries and cities while highlighting commonalities across the African continent. Written from an interdisciplinary perspective, the book covers important themes in transport and mobility including the links between urbanization, urban structure, and accessibility; transport equity and poverty, non-motorized transport, public transport, and the challenges and opportunities of new and emerging transport technologies, and ICT-mediated mobility solutions. Each chapter engages with the normative imperatives that are critical to improving the transport and mobility situations of African urban areas now and in the future.

This synthesis report acknowledges the many existing and cross-cutting opportunities to achieve development goals through the transformative force that urbanization represents. It also discusses the elaboration of targets, baselines and overall progress for selected indicators, placing special emphasis on partnership arrangement and opportunities for financing and scaling up activities and programmes. The report presents fresh data and new findings that help us understand our urban transitions and trends in these early years of the SDGs.

Regular physical activity is proven to help prevent and treat noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease stroke diabetes and breast and colon cancer. It also helps to prevent hypertension overweight and obesity and can improve mental health quality of life and well-being. In addition to the multiple health benefits of physical activity societies that are more active can generate additional returns on investment including a reduced use of fossil fuels cleaner air and less congested safer roads. These outcomes are interconnected with achieving the shared goals political priorities and ambition of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. The new WHO global action plan to promote physical activity responds to the requests by countries for updated guidance and a framework of effective and feasible policy actions to increase physical activity at all levels. It also responds to requests for global leadership and stronger regional and national coordination and the need for a whole-of-society response to achieve a paradigm shift in both supporting and valuing all people being regularly active according to ability and across the life course. The action plan was developed through a worldwide consultation process involving governments and key stakeholders across multiple sectors including health sports transport urban design civil society academia and the private sector.

Each track consisted of a plenary session followed by three concurrent breakout sessions. These proceedings follow the conference format, with the plenary sessions and the breakout sessions for each of the five tracks presented in chronological order. The breakout sessions and the closing session gave participants the opportunity to provide ideas and suggestions on further research, technology transfer, and training. Research topics identified for potential consideration are listed in the section on concluding remarks. The conference also featured an interactive poster session. Summaries provided by the poster authors are presented in Appendix A. The conference attracted 130 participants from Canada, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, South Africa, and the United States, and featured transportation specialists who offered real-world expertise on the application of performance metrics and case studies.
