Excerpt from Sources of Interest in High School English The purpose of this book is to show what relation literature bears to the youth. The subject is treated from the standpoint of the various types of literary art forms with a view to determine how the different elements of this art interest the readers, and at what stage of development they are most potent. The particular field covered is the high school period, but the grade immediately preceding this has also been considered, in order to show the transition from grammar to secondary schools. The general subject - relation of literature to children - has been treated before, but under different school conditions and with a different literary purpose in view. Clark Wissler (Pedagogical Seminary, vol. 5) conducted an investigation of the reading of some 2000 children in Indiana schools, based upon the selections in the class readers, from the second to the fifth year. He deals with children of an earlier age than those considered in this book, and he makes no attempt to find elements of interest in the several classes of literature; but his classification of selections is practically the same as this, and the choice of literary works shown in his report is of interest for comparison with that of older pupils. Clara Vostrovsky made a study of the library reading of 1200 Stockton children ranging in age from 9 to 19 years. Excerpt from Supplementary Reading List for High School English A combination of sources was chosen for this study: namely, state high school manuals, printed syllabi issued by city school systems, and sources of interest in literature as determined by former investigations. The lists in high school manuals represent the practice of the vast num ber of schools that have no prepared lists of their own. The printed lists issued in city school systems represent the work of men and women who are in close contact with the schools and who are experimenting with the selections. By taking into consideration sources of interest in literature as determined by thorough investigators, we may include selections in accord with the native interests of high school pupils of different ages. Excerpt from Introductory Lessons in English Literature: For High Schools and Academies This book is chiefly the outgrowth of experience and observation in teaching English to beginning classes. It is thought that the work outlined will give the pupil something definite to do during the preparation of the lesson, without encroaching upon the time that should be devoted to the recitation itself. By understanding the aim of the lesson, the pupil's mind, through previous application and awakening, becomes a fertile soil into which the seed of the teacher's thought and inspiration may fall and in due time yield an abundant harvest. In choosing the literary selections the needs of the student for life and citizenship have received the first consideration, but the work required for admission to col leges has not been slighted. The aim has been to present types of art in order to furnish an apperceiving basis for future study and appreciation of literature. After a thorough training such as this book is intended to give, more advanced work can be taken up with confidence.
