Excerpt from Some Problems in Market Distribution: Illustrating the Application of a Basic Philosophy of Business This reprint of "Some Problems in Market Distribution" from the Quarterly Journal of Economics for August, 1912, I am preceding with an introductory chapter, "The Nature and Relations of Business Activities." As all the activities of business are interdependent and all the problems of business arise out of the relations of these interdependent activities, this added matter may aid the reader by placing the activities of distribution in their relation to all the other activities of business. Many of the ideas and even the forms of expression in this small book have come from those with whom I have been associated at Harvard University and in the editorial offices of the magazines System and Factory. It would be difficult to make an adequate statement of my obligation to Dean Edwin Francis Gay of the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University. Without his cooperation - and I use the word in its broadest meaning - this book and the larger one, An Approach to Business Problems, soon to follow it, could hardly have been possible.
