Excerpt from Some Factors in Town and Country Relationships The greater the number of outstanding differences that are fostered between town and country which tend to hold the two classes aloof from each other, the more difficult becomes the problem of developing advantageous relationships. The rural population groups covered in this study are confined to the commonly recognized trade basin of the several centers. These rural groups range in total number of inhabitants from 200 people, who live within a radius of one and one-half miles to five miles around the cross-roads store at Waldheim, up to about people, who live within a radius of ten miles to twenty-two miles around the small city of Alexandria. Outlining the trade basins of each center was taken as the first task; church zones, high school zones, library zones, hospital and newspaper areas were also determined and studied. Only those maps of such zones and areas will be given in the bulletin which illustrate striking differences at tributable to size and grade of trading center. The character of the farmer patronage at the business houses, in the lodges, churches, schools and clubs was learned from properly in formed authorities. The statements of facts relating to eco nomic resources, settlement, population and development of the areas were obtained, in the main, from reliable printed reports. Excerpt from The Little Town: Especially in Its Rural Relationships This book has grown out of the author's interest in rural progress. For a number of years, in common with large numbers of his fellow Americans, he has been thinking and talking - sometimes publicly - about this great problem. As his thinking gradually clarified he became aware that neither he nor the others were dealing adequately with the phase of American life which he knew most about by experience, namely, the life of the little town. There is a new wealth of impulse and inspiration for the dweller in the open country. Most of it is equally applicable to the little town. But the author does not feel that, in its present form, it would greatly encourage him if he were still living in such a town. This book attempts to suggest in what infinite variety the gospel of rural progress applies to the little town. Country-life evangelists do not ordinarily regard it as any part of their business to address the town directly - unless to scold it. They treat it rather as an incidental, and indeed a trivial thing. The ruralist priest and equally the urban Levite have their own important business. They lend a glance to the little town's needs, but pass by on the other side. At most they only toss a casual word in its direction, to which the little town can only reply, "Did you speak to me? Excerpt from Country Towns, and the Place They Fill in Modern Civilization Nor are cities without an interest in the social condition of those small towns, from which, as from little centres, improvement radiates into the districts around; for it was-admitted in the Report of the Census of 1851 that a large proportion of city inhabitants are born in the country. Can we doubt that what the country makes them at first will have its effect on that which the city makes them at last? If the material be sound, it may be an open question whether the city will fashion it into greater completeness for good or evil; but if the material be rotten, what own the fabric be? The United States is among the wealthiest nations in the world, but it is far from the healthiest. Although life expectancy and survival rates in the United States have improved dramatically over the past century, Americans live shorter lives and experience more injuries and illnesses than people in other high-income countries. The U.S. health disadvantage cannot be attributed solely to the adverse health status of racial or ethnic minorities or poor people: even highly advantaged Americans are in worse health than their counterparts in other, "peer" countries. In light of the new and growing evidence about the U.S. health disadvantage, the National Institutes of Health asked the National Research Council (NRC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to convene a panel of experts to study the issue. The Panel on Understanding Cross-National Health Differences Among High-Income Countries examined whether the U.S. health disadvantage exists across the life span, considered potential explanations, and assessed the larger implications of the findings. U.S. Health in International Perspective presents detailed evidence on the issue, explores the possible explanations for the shorter and less healthy lives of Americans than those of people in comparable countries, and recommends actions by both government and nongovernment agencies and organizations to address the U.S. health disadvantage.
