The topics in this volume include: intermittency; correlations; QCD; phase transition; soft photons and Monte Carlo simulations of soft processes.

This volume presents the experimental and theoretical methods of studying soft interaction physics in high energy collisions. The topics include: dynamical and Bose-Einstein correlations, multiplicity fluctuation, soft photons, disoriented chiral condensate, self-similarity and self-affine behaviors, wavelet analysis, intermittency, chaos, and phase transition.

This book contains a wide spectrum of articles which report the current research progress in topics concerning the dynamics of multiparticle production in high energy collision processes, with emphasis on nonperturbative aspects of QCD. The topics covered are: the phase diagram of QCD and related transitions; correlations and fluctuations in a variety of experiments involving multiparticle production (e+e- annihilation, pp collisions and heavy ion collisions); recent theoretical and experimental developments in interferometry and particle correlations; event-by-event fluctuations in high energy experiments; concepts of chaos and complexity in multiparticle dynamics and related phenomenology; relevant theoretical ideas based on QCD as a field theory.

This volume contains more than 80 papers by theorists and experimentalists in the field of multiparticle production. A large variety of domains in high energy physics are covered. For each of these domains, an overview is given before the newest results are presented.

Multiparticle dynamics is tightly connected with the fundamental properties of the QCD vacuum. This was reflected in the Scientific Programme of the XXVIII International Symposium on Multiparticle Dynamics. Emphasis was given during the sessions to the collective phenomena at high energies, including: fluctuations and correlations, quark-gluon plasma, QCD phase transitions (fractals, intermittency, wavelets), the QCD structure of the Pomeron, and new aspects of multiplicity distributions.

This international meeting on ultrahigh energy multiparticle phenomena started with a summary of neutrino physics, followed by a detailed review of LEP results. It moved on to the fast-breaking field of rapidity gaps, hard pomeron and small-x structure functions at both Hera and the FermiLab Tevatron. The major collider experiments at FermiLab, and in particular, the results of the top quark search were presented in complete detail. The fields of intermittency, multiplicities, correlation functions, heavy quarks, soft and semihard hadronic physics, and the particle physics aspects of cosmic rays were subjects of spirited debate.
