Socioinformatics is a new scientific approach to study the interactions between humans and IT. These proceedings are a collection of the contributions during a workshop of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI). Researchers in this emerging field discuss the main aspects of interactions between IT and humans with respect to; social connections, social changes, acceptance of IT and the social conditions affecting this acceptance, effects of IT on humans and in response changes of IT, structures of the society and the influence of IT on these structures, changes of metaphysics influenced by IT and the social context of a knowledge society.

The three-volume set LNCS 12181, 12182, and 12183 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Human Computer Interaction thematic area of the 22nd International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2020, which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, in July 2020.* A total of 1439 papers and 238 posters have been accepted for publication in the HCII 2020 proceedings from a total of 6326 submissions. The 145 papers included in this HCI 2020 proceedings were organized in topical sections as follows: Part I: design theory, methods and practice in HCI; understanding users; usability, user experience and quality; and images, visualization and aesthetics in HCI. Part II: gesture-based interaction; speech, voice, conversation and emotions; multimodal interaction; and human robot interaction. Part III: HCI for well-being and Eudaimonia; learning, culture and creativity; human values, ethics, transparency and trust; and HCI in complex environments. *The conference was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The technology and application of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout society continues to grow at unprecedented rates, which raises numerous legal questions that to date have been largely unexamined. Although AI now plays a role in almost all areas of society, the need for a better understanding of its impact, from legal and ethical perspectives, is pressing, and regulatory proposals are urgently needed. This book responds to these needs, identifying the issues raised by AI and providing practical recommendations for regulatory, technical, and theoretical frameworks aimed at making AI compatible with existing legal rules, principles, and democratic values. An international roster of authors including professors of specialized areas of law, technologists, and practitioners bring their expertise to the interdisciplinary nature of AI.

The book is an exploration of the theoretical, conceptual and methodological foundations of human-centred design. Specifically, it critically examines the notion of 'practice' and argues for an understanding of the concept which emanates from engagement with design problems rather than simply from social scientific theory. The contributors to the book in their various ways all subscribe to a systematic account of how practice- oriented studies can inform design. Using the perspective of 'grounded design', it pursues a long term view of the design process, arguing for user engagement from the very earliest stages of design policy, including methods for understanding user practices to inform initial design policies up to and including processes of appropriation as technologies are embedded in contexts of use. Grounded design is a perspective which also deals with the vexed problem of appropriate generalization in design studies and the kinds of cross-comparison that can usefully be done. The book contains a number of case studies which exemplify these themes, some of which are rooted in the use of technology in organizational contexts, others of which deal with design in contexts such as care of the elderly, firefighting and multicultural education.

An approach to socio-technical HCI called Human Work Interaction Design (HWID) emerged around 2005. It has grown steadily, and now is the time for sharing this research with a wider audience. In this book, the HWID approach is used to discuss socio-technical HCI theory, cases, methods, and impact. The book introduces HWID as a multi-sided platform for theorizing about socio-technical HCI work design in the digital age. It presents design cases that illustrate the design of socio-technical relations, provides specific advice for researchers, consultants, and policy makers, and reflects on the open issues related to theorizing about sociotechnical HCI. The benefits of HWID include that it meets the requirement of taking both the social and the technical into account, while focusing strongly on the relationship between the social and the technical. In addition, it is truly international and explicitly considers local cultural, organizational, and technological contexts.

This book is about how computer systems might be designed to serve their users rather better. It deals with how to study the natural behaviour of users to see how computer systems might best help them, and how one might also involve them in the design of computer systems that will assist them in their everyday practices.
