This volume analyses the important structural changes and mobility that occurred in Hungary from the middle of the 19th to the end of the 20th centuries by using rich statistical and narrative sources, sometimes reaching to certain social stata. The period extending to WWI was the time of the establishment of the capital market economy, which went with the change of the occupational structure, the hierarchy of the status, and the culture. During the period between the two world wars, the territory and the population of the country greatly diminshed. This was also a reason of the slackening of the social mobility and the rigidity of the structure. After WWII, especially during the period of socialism, the political-led change of structure became determinant. All of these made possible the so-called "goulash communism," a change of life-style, from the sixties. From 1989 on, the return of the market capitalism has been forming the structure.

During the last few decades there has been a growing recognition of the great role that remembering and collective memory play in forming the historical awareness. In addition, the dominant national form of history writing also met some challenges on the side of a transnational approach to the past. In Remains of Socialism, Maya Nadkarni investigates the changing fates of the socialist past in postsocialist Hungary. She introduces the concept of "remains"—both physical objects and cultural remainders—to analyze all that Hungarians sought to leave behind after the end of state socialism. Spanning more than two decades of postsocialist transformation, Remains of Socialism follows Hungary from the optimism of the early years of transition to its recent right-wing turn toward illiberal democracy. Nadkarni analyzes remains that range from exiled statues of Lenin to the socialist-era "Bambi" soda, and from discredited official histories to the scandalous secrets of the communist regime's informers. She deftly demonstrates that these remains were far more than simply the leftovers of an unwanted past. Ultimately, the struggles to define remains of socialism and settle their fates would represent attempts to determine the future—and to mourn futures that never materialized.
