I search for a "scale" effect in countries. I use a panel data set that includes 200 countries over forty years and link the population of a country to a host of economic and social phenomena. Using both graphical and statistical techniques, I search for an impact of size on the level of income, inflation, material well-being, health, education, the quality of a country's institutions, heterogeneity, and a number of different international indices and rankings. I have little success; small countries are more open to international trade than large countries, but are not systematically different otherwise.

A man’s anatomy is a lot easier to understand than his mind, and knowing what’s going on down there is just as important to a happy relationship as figuring out the deeper meaning of his every word. You can analyze your relationship with your girlfriends, but who can you turn to with the more . . . sensitive questions? In Size Matters, Dr. Harry Fisch, an expert on the male reproductive system, and writer Kara Baskin team up to introduce you, metaphorically speaking, to the penis. Lindsey Malcolm is a sophomore in College with big aspirations for her future. With her love of writing in full bloom, she is hoping that she might be able to work towards making a living as a professional writer once she finishes school, something she plans to accomplish through her chosen career path. In order to assist in her attempts, she took a Creative Writing class, and as a result, ended up partnered with Lee Yang, the young Japanese exchange student who also has a great love of writing. After mustering up the courage to talk to Lee, Lindsey soon finds that the feelings that she had developed in secret for her classmate might not be as one-sided as she had once believed. However, it is obvious that both she and Lee have some minor emotional baggage, and their hesitation to admit to one another their desires could be the one thing that could make or break their chance to have a happy relationship together. Will they be able to find enough common ground that they will succeed in breaking the chains that seem to bind them, or will their relationship ultimately fail before it has a chance to start?

'The text is lightly written but, underneath the entertaining gloss of anecdote and personal detail, this is actually an intensely serious and carefully constructed book, aimed at informing the educated public about science in general and nanotechnology in particular. It is attractively produced, with innumerable well-captioned coloured images … To my mind, Colm Durkan has succeeded in combining the accessible style of the best science journalists with the authority and vision that come from being a successful scientist and an expert in his field.'Contemporary PhysicsNanotechnology is a buzz word many of us have heard but are uncertain what it really means. This book works to dispel the myths and unravel the truth about this branch of science and technology that has already touched many aspects of our lives, from cheaper and faster medical diagnostic tools and more effective ways to deliver existing ones to helping to create new medicines and electronic devices.Size Really Does Matter starts by looking at the science and history of nanotechnology, followed by real-life examples of how it is used, what cutting-edge research is being carried out and why, and potential risks of this exciting new technology. It is written in an accessible style with genuine enthusiasm for the topics it addresses, including how nanotechnology hopes to address problems in several fields, such as cancer research, novel devices, new materials and improved manufacturing methods for existing products.Related Link(s)
