Considered the world leader in designing iconic public architecture, Curtis Fentress is redefining the art of civic buildings. In Touchstones of Design: Redefining Public Architecture, Fentress features many of his most innovative and inspiring works. This includes a new vision for LAX that embodies a design philosophy learned through time and experience. Best known for flipping the design of Denver International Airport upside down, Fentress introduces drama and beauty to the spaces communities use everyday. North-Carolina born Fentress left his position with I.M. Pei and Kohn Pedersen Fox to found his own firm in 1980 in Denver and began designing major projects.

"Connell Ward and Lucas were seen by some as irritants on the British architectural scene of the 1930s - a scene largely the province of traditionalists, class snobberies and latent xenophobia. They ruffled the feathers of the architectural establishment and poured scorn on the ignorant and restrictive practices of the planners. They even infuriated their MARS Group colleagues. Never deviating from their beliefs in Corbusian principles, they produced the most authentic modern buildings of the period, many of which now have iconic significance." "This book is the first major monograph on Connell Ward and Lucas and the result of many years of research and study. It puts the work of the trio into the context of the times and incorporates unique material obtained from their colleagues, friends and relatives as well as contemporary and newly commissioned photographs, original drawings and authoritative statements by all three partners."--BOOK JACKET.

The British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) designed 140 cemeteries in the countryside of Flanders and Northern France for soldiers killed in the First World War. The cemeteries can be regarded as an imprint, as it were, of the former battlefront on the map of Europe. All are designed to principles established beforehand, including uniform gravestones, a large Stone of Remembrance and a large cross. Yet the difference in size, alignment and provenance make them all unique variations on the themes in question. The most memorable aspects are their meticulously chosen position in the landscape, the varied selection of trees and other greenery and the architecture of the entrance and shelter buildings. This illustrated book charts the history of the designs and exposes the underlying principle of order and variation in the architecture in an exhaustive landscape-architectural analysis. All 140 cemeteries are fully documented with references to the places where they are to be found.
