Despite being the founding scripture of a prominent religion, the Book of Mormon has escaped the attention of world scholars. Why is this? Thomas asks. To date, most research, conducted almost exclusively by Latter-day Saints, has been aimed at reconstructing the book's historical origins rather than at interpreting its message. In a sense, this begs readers to take the book seriously.Thomas wants to see prejudice, on the one hand, and over-reverence, on the other, set aside, to see people approach the Book of Mormon on its own terms. He follows the current direction in biblical studies. In determining the intent of a passage, he considers narrative patterns and literary forms. He does so both sensitively and honestly. He says he writes for the non-believer as well as for believers -- for seekers of a lost world and for those who seek a new one -- those who may have misplaced their world somewhere along the way.

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO? Sit at the edge of the waters of Mormon Cross the river Sidon at the city and valley of Gideon Climb mount Antipas Follow the path Coriantumr used to attack the city of Zarahemla Journey to the city of Judea in Manti with the 2000 stripling soldiers Explore the land of the Nephite kings, Zeniff, Noah and Limhi Stand where king Benjamin spoke to the people from the tower Visit the shores of the east sea and west sea at the narrow neck Waters of Mormon - NC Mount Antipas - NC East sea near the narrow neck - NY You can now. The search for the lands of the Book of Mormon has been an object of interest and conjecture ever since it was published in 1830. Many serious and well researched studies have been conducted for locations from South America, to Central America, to North America and beyond. Substantive theories have been generated and extensive academic treatises and books have been written and websites created to promote a wide range of models attempting to address the sites and locations of where the events took place. Each model has its proponents and its detractors, and each has credible scriptural, scientific and archaeological evidence to support elements of each model. The North America Model for the Book of Mormon, From Jerusalem to Cumorah, locates events, not just generally, but with specificity in many cases. It is based on the contemporarily written word, the preferred source for historical research. Since the Book of Mormon is true, what better source would there be? It is time to unravel the geography of the Book of Mormon from Jerusalem to Cumorah that has been hidden in plain sight since 1830. The North America Model indicates how close the historical and geographical footprint of the wars, contentions and travels of the Nephites and Lamanites may have facilitated the actual founding and preservation of the United States of America in the prophesied land of promise through the paths and trails that the ancient peoples who inhabited the land created and which were used not only by the colonists during the Revolutionary War but also in the course of the Civil War. The legacy of the Book of Mormon is more intimately intertwined with the United States of America, the promised land of liberty, than originally thought. Religion. For thousands of years this thing has dictated which people should live and which people should die, what shape our buildings should have or what colors our garments should contain, what food people should eat or what words people should speak. If religion is the opium of the masses, then beliefs about the end of the world are like overdoses. People touched by such beliefs no longer rely on a hidden, personal and intimate god, contemplated upon from the safe distance of the beating human heart. They live with the promise of divine intervention at a grand scale on the current coordinates of space and time. This can be an exceptional motivator and a game changer in terms of civil obedience, both at an individual and collective level. In the name of an immediate and palpable deity people can commit shocking cruelties. However, such belief can also account for some of the most exceptional social developments in human history.

1 Nephi through Mosiah. This volume is the first of three on the Book of Mormon. It covers 1st Nephi through the Book of Mosiah. This includes the journey of Lehi and his family across the Arabian Peninsula to Bountiful. It follows them on to the promised land, where the Nephites and Lamanites separated. It contains the marvelous prophesies of Lehi, Nephi, and Jacob. We then read remarks from the book's editor in the words of Mormon, and follow the Nephites until their establishment in the land of Zarahemla under King Mosiah. In all, it covers 508 years of Nephite history up until about 92 BC when the book of Alma began. The cover features a beautiful photograph of the Land Bountiful taken by Scot Facer Proctor.
