This book focuses on the theoretical problems associated with molecular diversity as it is being applied in the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, this book deals with algorithms that are involved in understanding chemical space and selection of diverse sets of structures. The algorithms also deal with the problem of focused diversity where chemical libraries are being created within a structured physical volume. Diversity is necessarily connected to combinational chemistry, although this book is limited to the application of diversity methods to combinational chemistry and does not deal with synthetic methods. It is this focus on algorithms and strategies for exploiting molecular diversity that makes it different from books on combinational chemistry. The intended readership of the book falls into two categories: those actively engaged in applying molecular diversity in the chemical industry and those in academia who are developing strategies to embrace, understand and accept the many problems thrown up by this new research field of molecular diversity.

Although diversity is one of the central themes of ecology there is considerable disagreement ab out how it should be measured. I first encountered this problem 10 ycars ago whcn I started my research career and spent a long time pouring ovcr the literature in order to find the most useful techniques. The intervening decade has seen a further increasc in the number ofpapers devoted to the topic of ecological diversity but has led to no consensus on how it should be measured. My aim in writing this book is therefore to provide a practical guide to ecological diversity and its measurement. In a quantitative subject such as the measurement of diversity it is inevitable that some mathematics are involved, but at all times these are kept as simple as possible, and the emphasis is constantly on ecological reality and practical application. I hope that others ente ring thc fascinating ficld of ecological diversity will find it hclpful. This book grew out of my work in The School of Biological and Environmental Studies at the New University ofUlster, Coleraine, Northern Ircland. I am indebted to all the ecologists there for pro vi ding a stimulating atmosphere. Foremost among these were Amyan Macfadyen and Palmer Newbould. A number of the figures and tables in the book are based on data collected in Northern Irish woodlands.

Diversity analysis examines variation in a system through the use of statistical indices to measure that variation. Presenting a consistent statistical framework for the methodology based on diversity indices and their estimation, this book provides an accessible introduction to the tools and techniques of diversity analysis in ecology. It enables readers to choose proper measures and interpret the results. Each chapter features a wide range of detailed examples that use real ecological data to demonstrate various applications of the methods discussed. Software for implementing these examples is freely available for download on a supporting website.

Ecological data has several special properties: the presence or absence of species on a semi-quantitative abundance scale; non-linear relationships between species and environmental factors; and high inter-correlations among species and among environmental variables. The analysis of such data is important to the interpretation of relationships within plant and animal communities and with their environments. In this corrected version of Data Analysis in Community and Landscape Ecology, without using complex mathematics, the contributors demonstrate the methods that have proven most useful, with examples, exercises and case-studies. Chapters explain in an elementary way powerful data analysis techniques such as logic regression, canonical correspondence analysis, and kriging.

This book is about phylogenetic diversity as an approach to reduce biodiversity losses in this period of mass extinction.
