Neuro-ophthalmological symptoms frequently arise in disorders which alter the intracranial and intraorbital circulation. Because of the wide range of sensory and cognitive systems involved in vision and eye movements, visual disturbances are typically found in the common vascular disorders, such as atherosclerosis, migraine, and aneurysms, but can also result from practically any, common or rare, local or systemic vascular disorder. The dysfunction can be part of a largersyndrome or the predominant clinical abnormality. Many of the newer concepts concerning the diagnosis and treatment of neurovascular disorders have evolved in consequence of advances in techniques for neuroimaging such as MRI; methods of measuring systemic coagulation and inflammation; and superselective catheterization ofabnormal blood vessels and vascular lesions. The neuroophthalmological evaluation of clinical signs and symptoms often leads to accurate localization and diagnosis of the lesion. Many of these clinical abnormalities, such as visual field defects and ocular misalignments, can be quantified and followed to assess either the natural history of the disorder or the effects of therapies. No one medical specialty can manage these neurovascular neuro-ophthalmological disorders alone. The complexity of diagnosis and treatment planning requires a multi- disciplinary team. This approach, bringing ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, and neurologists together to confer in the management of these cases, has been pioneered by the authors' group at the New York University Medical Center.

Synopsis of Ophthalmology, Sixth Edition provides information pertinent to the main aspects of ophthalmology. This book provides the correct diagnosis and treatment of many ocular disorders. Organized into 15 chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the various disorders of the eyelids, including cystic lesions, tumors, involution entropion, and neurogenic ptosis. This text then explains the cause of infiltrative ophthalmopathy, which is the increase in mucopolysaccharides in extraocular muscles leading to enlargement, fibrosis, and restrictive myopathy. Other chapters consider some of the more serious ophthalmological emergencies, including retinal vascular disorders, intraocular tumors, inflammatory glaucomas, retinal detachments, uveitis, conjunctivitis, corneal lesions, cataract, ectopia lentis, and acquired maculopathies. This book discusses as well the earliest clinical manifestations of age-related macular degeneration. The final chapter deals with the diagnosis, clinical features, signs and treatment of myopathies of extraocular muscles. This book is a valuable resource for ophthalmologists, clinicians, and postgraduate students.

Written by ophthalmologists and carefully reviewed by primary care consultants, this new reference provides the primary care physician with exactly the information needed to either diagnose an eye disorder or identify the signs and symptoms to refer the treatment to an ophthalmologist. The text begins with chapters on performing the general examination of the eye and differential diagnosis. Then each region of the eye is covered, first with a discussion of anatomy in order to define any abnormalities, followed by signs and symptoms of various disorders of that region. A treatment plan is then offered, or a recommendation to refer to an ophthalmologist. Hundreds of high-quality, color illustrations are used throughout to aid the reader in arriving at an accurate diagnosis. For ease of access, an easy-to-follow, bulleted format has been used throughout, designed to assist with quick recognition and diagnosis of ophthalmic disorders. Full-color illustrations provide an excellent diagnostic tool. Topics are organized by eye region and/or symptom recognition, further aiding the non-specialist in recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. Chapter authors have been paired with primary care consultants to ensure relevance to the needs of the primary care practitioner.
