Support vector machines (SVMs) represent a breakthrough in the theory of learning systems. It is a new generation of learning algorithms based on recent advances in statistical learning theory. Designed for the undergraduate students of computer science and engineering, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to the state-of-the-art algorithm and techniques in this field. It covers most of the well known algorithms supplemented with code and data. One Class, Multiclass and hierarchical SVMs are included which will help the students to solve any pattern classification problems with ease and that too in Excel. KEY FEATURES Extensive coverage of Lagrangian duality and iterative methods for optimization Separate chapters on kernel based spectral clustering, text mining, and other applications in computational linguistics and speech processing A chapter on latest sequential minimization algorithms and its modifications to do online learning Step-by-step method of solving the SVM based classification problem in Excel. Kernel versions of PCA, CCA and ICA The CD accompanying the book includes animations on solving SVM training problem in Microsoft EXCEL and by using SVMLight software . In addition, Matlab codes are given for all the formulations of SVM along with the data sets mentioned in the exercise section of each chapter.

This book first presents a systematic theoretical study of wireless localization techniques. Then, guided by the theoretical results, the authors provide design approaches for improving the performance of localization systems and making the deployment of the systems more convenient. The book aims to address the following issues: how reliable the wireless localization system can be; how the system can scale up with the number of users to be served; how to make key design decisions in implementing the system; and how to mitigate human efforts in deploying the wireless localization system. The book is relevant for researchers, academics, and students interested in wireless localization technology.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.
