Strange things happen when you make friends with Evil. "Masterfully told, beautifully written, dreamlike world to submerge your senses." - Amazon Review Princess Serap is the only frail human seeking courtship in Qaf, a magical world full of long-lived djinn. Sure that her shorter life span is the reason her romances fail, Serap runs away from the palace to find the secret to eternal life said to be held by the terrifying Immortal Killer. But if there's a forbidden box, Serap can't help but open it--and in the end, her hapless curiosity enrages the very one she sought for help. Locked in a dungeon by a cruel captor, a parade of haunted house guests and embodied secrets threaten her mortality more than living ever did. Trapped where logic is lost, fantastical magic runs amuck, and Evil speaks in the ghastly dark, her innocent naivety and desire to be loved may be the only thing that could save her. The problem? The Immortal Killer thinks so, too . . . **** Haunting of the Immortal Killer is a sweet, first love, clean fantasy romance (romantacy) that takes place in medieval historical Spain. "Breakneck in pace and breathtaking in prose," Rose Amber Reviews calls Fires of Qaf "A stunning new fantasy series." Ayelet is desperate for connection. After fifteen years wretchedly alone and on the run from the faceless tormentor of her childhood, street musician Ayelet is willing to risk anything to reconnect with her first love--even if it means getting caught by her former slave master. At least, she thinks she is until she runs into the diamond eyes and cold smile of a handsomely devilish djinn prince. Forced together by giant lava monsters and raging ghouls, the last thing Prince Jahmil needs is a coquettish human woman to slow him down and play games with his mind. He has a kingdom to save and a rival to destroy and getting rid of her should be all too easy--until he hears the magic in her music. Half convinced she is his mate and equally convinced she is his doom, Jahmil must decide what's most important: his kingdom or his heart. Unfortunately, the Faceless Man will not be forgotten and this dangerous alliance might be the only way out for both of them, if it doesn’t get them killed first. ***This is a clean, sweet romance that takes place in magical, medieval Turkey.*** If you love A Court of Thorns and Roses and The Cruel Prince you'll love the Fires of Qaf! Vast legions of gods, mages, humans, dragons and all manner of creatures play out the fate of the Malazan Empire in this first book in a major epic fantasy series from Steven Erikson. The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen's rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, yet holds out. It is to this ancient citadel that Laseen turns her predatory gaze. However, it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand... Conceived and written on a panoramic scale, Gardens of the Moon is epic fantasy of the highest order--an enthralling adventure by an outstanding new voice. Kansas-born Pauline Benton (1898-1974) was encouraged by her father, one of America's earliest feminist male educators, to reach for the stars. Instead, she reached for shadows. In 1920s Beijing, she discovered shadow theatre (piyingxi), a performance art where translucent painted puppets are manipulated by highly trained masters to cast coloured shadows against an illuminated screen. Finding that this thousand-year-old forerunner of motion pictures was declining in China, Benton believed she could save the tradition by taking it to America. Mastering the male-dominated art form in China, Benton enchanted audiences eager for the exotic in Depression-era America. Her touring company, Red Gate Shadow Theatre, was lauded by theatre and art critics and even performed at Franklin Roosevelt's White House. Grant Hayter-Menzies traces Benton's performance history and her efforts to preserve shadow theatre as a global cultural treasure by drawing on her unpublished writings, the recollections of her colleagues, the testimonies of shadow masters who survived China's Cultural Revolution, as well as young innovators who have carried on Benton's pioneering work.
