Excerpt from Shadow and Sunshine As naught but nightshade grew upon earth's ground Love turned all his to heart'sease, and the more Fate tried his bastions, she but forced a door Leading to sweeter manhood and more sound. - James Russell Lowell. My father and mother were slaves. Father was born in North Carolina, Aug ust 15th, 1831. He was a twin, and was sold away from his parents and twin brother, Harry, at the age of three years. This separation, at so tender an age, was for all time, as never again did he see his loved ones. In after years he had a faint recollection of his mother, and could remember distinctly the words of introduction with which he was handed over from his old master to his new' Whip that boy and make him mind. Excerpt from Through Shadow to Sunshine For a number of years the Author of this little volume has been in the habit of keeping a memorandum of the various incidents coming under his own observation, illustrative of the laws regulating the traffic in intoxicating drinks. In the following pages he has endeavored to weave these various incidents into the form of a simple story, in the hope that it may aid those who are so earnestly striving to save our country from this great national evil. He is fully conscious of its many demerits as a literary effort, and trusts this frank acknowledgement will, as much as is proper; disarm criticism. It his been written at odd times, snatched from the most possible busy, active life, in many cases during hours that should have been devoted to sleep. The scenes are mostly given just as he knew them in some cases not even the name being changed. With an earnest prayer that it may accomplish its purpose, that by it some weak ones may be strengthened, and sorrowing ones be encouraged to labor and to hope, he sends it forth on its humble mission. Excerpt from Arthur in Shadow and Sunshine As he started off up the road, he decided to play, as he Often did with Frank, that he was a circus boy, without father or mother or any one belonging to him. He played that he had been stolen by a circus man, who treated him very cruelly, and he was now running away. He called himself Charley May lard, the name of a minstrel he had lately seen and greatly admired. Arthur strolled along the road for some distance, at last coming to a point from which he could see the railroad depot, a place always full of interest to him. He concluded to go on far enough to watch the cars as they passed. A train came puffing up just as he reached the platform. It suddenly oc cured to Arthur that it would be a fine thing to go to the city and meet his papa. He knew where his father's Office was, and hoped he would call him a real brave boy to have come all the way by himself. Without further consideration he jumped on board. Almost immediately the train was in motion. There were plenty of seats to be had. He slipped into one near the door. He began to feel frightened, and would gladly have re turned home had it been possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lyrics of Sunshine and Shadow A Boy's Summer Song 'Tis fine to play In the fragrant hay, And romp on the golden load; To ride old Jack To the barn and back, Or tramp by a shady road. To pause and drink, At a mossy brink; Ah, that is the best of joy, And so I say On a summer's day, What's so fine as being a boy? Ha, Ha! With line and hook By a babbling brook, The fisherman's sport we ply; And list the song Of the feathered throng That flit in the branches nigh.
