Rae Langton here draws together her ground-breaking work on pornography and objectification. On pornography she argues from uncontroversial liberal premises to the controversial feminist conclusions that pornography subordinates and silences women, and that women have rights against pornography. On objectification she begins with the traditional idea that objectification involves treating a person as a thing, but then shows that it is through a kind of self-fulfilling projection of beliefs and perceptions of women as subordinate that women are made subordinate and treated as things. These controversial essays in feminist philosophy will be stimulating reading for anyone interested in the status of women in society.

Debates over pornography tend to be heated and deeply polarized--as with other topics that have to do with sex, pornography cuts to the core of our values and convictions. Philosophical debates concerning pornography are fraught with difficult questions: What is pornography? What does pornography do (if anything at all)? Is the consumption of pornography a harmless private matter, or does pornography violate women's civil rights? What, if anything, should legally be done about pornography? Can there be a genuinely feminist pro-pornography stance? Answering these questions is complicated by widespread confusion over the conceptual and political commitments of different anti- and pro-pornography positions, and whether these positions are even in tension with one another. For a start, different people understand pornography differently and can easily end up talking past one another. In order to clarify the debate and make genuine philosophical headway in discussing the topic of pornography, Mari Mikkola here provides an accessible introduction to contemporary philosophical debates conducted from a feminist philosophical perspective. The starting point of the book's examination is morally neutral, and the book provides a comprehensive discussion of various philosophical positions on pornography that are found in ethics, aesthetics, feminist philosophy, political philosophy, epistemology, and social ontology. The book clarifies different stances in the debate, thus clarifying and helping readers to understand what exactly is as stake. In addition, although the book does not argue for a single outlook, it puts forward substantive philosophical views on different aspects of philosophical debates about pornography. Mikkola ultimately offers readers important methodological insights about doing philosophical work on something as ubiquitous as pornography.

Applied epistemology brings the tools of contemporary epistemology to bear on particular issues of social concern. While the field of social epistemology has flourished in recent years, there has been far less work on how theories of knowledge, justification, and evidence may be applied to concrete questions, especially those of ethical and political significance. This volume fills this gap in the current literature by bringing together leading philosophers in a broad range of areas in applied epistemology. The potential topics in applied epistemology are many and diverse, and this volume focuses on seven central issues, some of which are general while others are far more specific: epistemological perspectives; epistemic and doxastic wrongs; epistemology and injustice; epistemology, race, and the academy; epistemology and feminist perspectives; epistemology and sexual consent; and epistemology and the internet. Some of the chapters in this volume contribute to, and further develop, areas in social epistemology that are already active, while others open up entirely new avenues of research. All of the contributions aim to make clear the relevance and importance of epistemology to some of the most pressing social and political questions facing us as agents in the world.

This witty and provocative study of sex and marriage manuals reveals the patterns of permissiveness and prohibition, and, tellingly, the mechanisms of suasion and enforcement - from sermons and hellfire to mutilation and electroshock - that have informed popular sex education over the past hundred and twenty years. From the roaring '20s to the 1960s sexual revolution and after, Teaching America about Sex reveals that, even as sexual behavior changed during periods of upheaval, the prescriptive literature on sex has remained traditional at its core, promoting primarily sex within marriage for the purpose of reproduction.

The media informs, entertains, and connects us. It is woven into the fabric of politics. Its increasing immediacy has become an inescapable feature of almost everybody’s life. We are, at the same time, subject to the media and participants in it. The ethical questions it raises have never been more urgent. Trust is in short supply, but we need to share information while dealing with problems like misinformation, disinformation, and echo chambers. And what responsibilities fall on the state, and on other actors such as artists, advertisers, and social media users, as we reckon with endemic problems like racism, sexism, and classism? The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy and Media Ethics is an outstanding survey and assessment of this vitally important field. Comprising thirty chapters written by an international team of contributors, the Handbook is divided into five parts: Freedom of Speech, Privacy, and Censorship The News Media Broadening the Scope: Giving Other Aspects of the Media their Due Justice, Power, and Representation Vice and Virtue Online The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy and Media Ethics is essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy, media and communication studies, politics, and law, as well as practising media professionals and journalists.
