After graduating from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1937, Delano worked for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and the Office of War Information (OWI) as a photographer. Derek Cross was one of a group of outstanding railway photographers, who mostly took pictures during the steam and early modern traction era, 1950s and 1960s.
