H., For the Financial Year 1937 The people of Nashua have entrusted us with the high privilege of serving them in their municipal government. We share a com mon purpose: to maintain a city of which we can all be justly proud and to make Nashua even a better city to live in. We seek to give to the people of Nashua the best possible government. Our objec tive is a clean city with fine streets, well policed, efficiently governed, with splendid schools for our children and grandchildren, - a city in which no imposter lingers upon the relief rolls and in which no one entitled to relief is permitted to suffer in silence. These things we seek. Seeking them we shall not forget that one of the greatest benefits of good government is a minimum burden of taxation. Excerpt from Ninety-First Annual Report of the Municipal Government of the City of Nashua, New Hampshire: For the Financial Year 1943 We are meeting here today under far different circumstances than two years ago. At that time Pearl Harbor was but three weeks in the past. We were a sorely troubled nation, ill-prepared on the home front for the unknown trials and tribulations which lay ahead. There is no need to recall for you here today the giant strides we have taken in two years. All of you have played some part in our coming of age. Our factories are teeming with men and women who are turning out the materials of war with a skill and workmanship surpassed by none. Thousands of our young men and women have left the City for training camps and hundreds are carrying on the fight for us on every battlefront of the world. Those of you at home have cheerfully made sacrifices and have contributed in every way possible to necessary home front activities. Threat of disaster has brought us closer together. It has united us through the darkest chapters of our proud history. We have come, finally, to a greater appreciation of what our way of life has meant to us and how necessary it is going to be to continue that way of life for the future of generations to come. The end of the war, of course, is not yet in sight. But the dark days of uncertainty are over. We cannot be over optimistic in saying that the beginning of the end is at hand. The coming two years, in many respects, represent a challenge that we, as elected representatives of the citizens of Nashua, cannot ignore. It is possible that another administration will get underway before the present war ends and it might be easy to adopt a course of saying that we should not cross a bridge until we come to it. I, for one, would never rest easy if this war came to an end, suddenly, and it is possible, without our having prepared the way for those who are going to return to civilian life some day.
