Excerpt from Seventh Biennial Report of the Board of Trustees of the Historical and Miscellaneous Department of the Montana State Library: 1903 1904 Dear Sir: The board of trustees of the historical and miscellaneous department of the State Library, pursuant to and as required by subdivision 7 of Section 2382 of the Political Code, herewith submit a statement of all important transactions of said department for the two years last past, together with suggestions as to what we deem necessary for the increased utility of said department. Our statement, is embodied in the accompanying comprehensive report of the librarian, to whose untiring and intelligent efforts the gratifying condition of the library is chiefly due. Her work cannot be too highly commended. Suggestions. That portion of the report of the librarian appearing under the title "Recommendations," is addressed primarily to this board and will have consideration from time to time, as opportunity may offer. Some of the recommendations, however, are of such character as to require legislative action before they can be favorably acted upon by this board. Among these arc the following, as to which we very earnestly recommend that such appropriations be made and such legislation enacted as will enable this board to carry the recommendations into effect 1. The furnishing or completion of the three vaults in the sub-basement. 2. The publication of 500 copies of the biennial report of the board of trustees, the same to include the report of the librarian, or as much thereof as in the judgment of the board may be of sufficient interest to the public to justify the expense of publication. 3. The publication in 1905 of a book catalogue. 4. The publication in 1906 of volume VI of "Contributions." 5. The employment of trained assistants. 6. The purchase of the bound files of the "Herald." 7. The publication in convenient form of state library laws. Excerpt from Tenth Biennial Report of the Board of Trustees of the Historical and Miscellaneous Department of the Montana State Library, 1909-1910 Our inability to get papers properly and readily bound has been a source of great annoyance and inconvenience. We have only been able to secure the binding of 60 volumes a year, which leaves the files of some county papers unbound back as far as 1904. There are over 100 newspapers published in the state and the accumulation of unbound files becomes very burdensome and difficult to handle. The library continues to receive the principal periodicals. It is the only reading room in the State House and is very well patronized. Many of the periodicals are valuable for binding purposes and several hundred volumes will be bound, as soon as the binder, to whom the state contract has been awarded is able to handle the work which we require. We invite particular attention to what has been done in furnishing material for the Montana High School Debating League, in the preparation of reference material for the use of the members of the Legislature, and in the identification of the Fort established by the Missouri Fur Company near Three Forks, in Gallatin County, in the year 1809, and we very heartily recommend that ample provision be made for the continuance and enlargement of these special lines of work.
