We have measured the lifetime of an ensemble of particles containing b quarks, tagged with a high p/sub T/ lepton from their semileptonic decay. Using a method which estimates the production point of each particle in the beam ellipse, we measured a lifetime of 0.98 +- 0.12 +- 0.13 psec. We have also studied methods of partially reconstructing B mesons decaying into D/sup/star//minus// mesons plus charged leptons or mesons. We have searched the Mark II PEP data samples and find five candidates for B° decay. Four of these B° candidates form good vertices, and their measured proper lifetimes are presented. 18 refs.

The aim of this book is to offer to the next generation of young researchers a broad and largely self-contained introduction to the physics of heavy ion collisions and the quark-gluon plasma, providing material beyond that normally found in the available textbooks. For each of the main aspects - QCD thermodynamics and global features of the QGP, collision hydrodynamics, electromagnetic probes, jet and quarkonium production, color glass condensate, and the gravity connection - the present volume provides extensive and pedagogical lectures, surveying the present status of both theory and experiment. A particular feature of this volume is that all lectures have been written with the active assistance of selected students present at the course in order to ensure the adequate level and coverage for the intended readership.

This book focuses on the ideas to embed nuclear physics in the larger context of hadronic physics by stressing and deepening its widening overlap with particle, astroparticle and condensed matter physics and to emphasize the unity of the two facets not only of nuclear, but of the whole physics; the theoretical and the experimental ones. Counteracting the ominous trend of enlarging the gap between the two, the danger being of depriving experimental physics of ideas promoting experiments and of transforming theoretical physics into metaphysics. The reader will find modern conceptions on nuclear structure, how atomic nuclei are probed through the scattering of high energy electrons and how they interact when accelerated at ultra-relativistic energies.
