Alicia Thorne and a few others have been given a vaccine that can extend life span by centuries. Why then have so many people had to die for it? As a young doctor walks a desolate hospital hallway, while working a lonely night shift, he realizes that he is being pursued. Cautiously, he writes a plea for help in the in-patient chart of Alicia Thorne. His small note is the key to finding out the horrid secret behind the vaccine and more importantly, how to destroy it. In spite of his efforts, that night the young doctor is murdered in the gross pathology department, while Alicia Thorne is discharged form the hospital and her in-patient chart is carted away to Medical Records to collect dust, until one hundred thirty-two years later. Throughout the story, we catch glimpses of Dr. Holtz’s life—past, present and future. We learn about Mr. Helfrick, a man who knows nothing of his beginnings nor if he will ever have and end. We later realize that he is patient zero and that it is through his cells that the vaccine is born. We learn of a future age-conscious society, far more sophisticated than our present society, yet all too familiar.

We know the tales of Columbus and Captain Cook, yet much earlier mariners made equally bold and world-changing voyages. In Beyond the Blue Horizon, archaeologist and historian Brian Fagan tackles his richest topic yet: the enduring quest to master the oceans, the planet's most mysterious terrain. From the moment when ancient Polynesians first dared to sail beyond the horizon, Fagan vividly explains how our mastery of the oceans changed the course of human history. What drove humans to risk their lives on open water? How did early sailors unlock the secrets of winds, tides, and the stars they steered by? What were the earliest ocean crossings like? With compelling detail, Fagan reveals how seafaring evolved so that the forbidding realms of the sea gods were transformed from barriers into a nexus of commerce and cultural exchange. From bamboo rafts in the Java Sea to triremes in the Aegean, from Norse longboats in the North Atlantic to sealskin kayaks in Alaska, Fagan crafts a captivating narrative of humanity's urge to challenge the unknown and seek out distant shores.

Yet despite the abundance of these Christian references in popular culture, how many of us have examined the hard edges of this biblical story? In his new book Timothy Keller takes readers on an illuminating journey into the surprising background of the nativity. By understanding the message of hope and salvation within the Bible’s account of Jesus’ birth, readers will experience the redeeming power of God’s grace in a deeper and more meaningful way.

"My house is the red earth; it could be the center of the world." This is Navajo country, a land of mysterious and delicate beauty. "Stephen Strom's photographs lead you to that place," writes Joy Harjo. "The camera eye becomes a space you can move through into the powerful landscapes that he photographs. The horizon may shift and change all around you, but underneath it is the heart with which we move." Harjo's prose poems accompany these images, interpreting each photograph as a story that evokes the spirit of the Earth. Images and words harmonize to evoke the mysteries of what the Navajo call the center of the world.
