This primer describes the general model independent searches for new physics phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. First, the motivation for performing general model independent experimental searches for new physics is presented by giving an overview of the current theoretical understanding of particle physics in terms of the Standard Model of particle physics and its shortcomings. Then, the concept and features of general model independent search for new physics at collider based experiments is explained. This is followed by an overview of such searches performed in past high energy physics experiments and the current status of such searches, particularly in the context of the experiments at the LHC. Finally, the future prospects of such general model independent searches, with possible improvements using new tools such as machine learning techniques, is discussed.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is currently the world's premier facility for the study of high-energy particle physics. The goal of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the LHC is to search for new phenomena in particle physics at the TeV scale. One of the mysteries that data from CMS may solve is the origin of dark matter. It is hoped that dark matter particles will be produced in the proton-proton collisions of the LHC, either by themselves or along with other new particles. This would allow the laws that govern dark matter to be explored. Collisions containing dark matter particles will pose new challenges for collider physics, necessitating the development of new methods to deal with these problems. One class of methods for addressing these problems is kinematic endpoint variables such as MT2 and MCT. A great deal of theoretical work has been done in developing these methods, but they have seldom been applied in experiment. We apply these methods to data taken with CMS to address two problems: mass measurement in underconstrained events and searches for new physics. In doing so, we also provide a new measurement of the top-quark mass and search for new physics in events with two leptons and a momentum imbalance.

This Ph.D. thesis is a search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) of particle physics, which successfully describes the interactions and properties of all known elementary particles. However, no particle exists in the SM that can account for the dark matter, which makes up about one quarter of the energy-mass content of the universe. Understanding the nature of dark matter is one goal of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The extension of the SM with supersymmetry (SUSY) is considered a promising possibilities to explain dark matter. The nominated thesis describes a search for SUSY using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. It utilizes a final state consisting of a photon, a lepton, and a large momentum imbalance probing a class of SUSY models that has not yet been studied extensively. The thesis stands out not only due to its content that is explained with clarity but also because the author performed more or less all aspects of the thesis analysis by himself, from data skimming to limit calculations, which is extremely rare, especially nowadays in the large LHC collaborations.
