Newfoundland songs are diverse in origin. Vast numbers of them come from the British Isles, especially from England and Ireland; many are composed in Newfoundland, usually on English or Irish models; a lesser number of American, Canadian, and French songs are current. The ballads to be found in the Child collection are probably the oldest now sung. Then there are many seventeenth- and eighteenth-century broadside ballads, particularly English, and many nineteenth-century compositions. Such are the backgrounds from which the compilers of this volume have drawn their unusually interesting and delightful collection of ballad texts and ballad music. Expeditions to the island in 1920 and 1929 furnished the tunes; and a genuine interest in folk-literature assured the care and accuracy of the work.

In youth the author's heart put to sea to search for a love that stands the tests of time. Now, he and his wife go on missions of mercy, occasionally by sea; and the small ketch they call “Tiare Maori” is being prepared to sail on “the wings of the dawn”. The Vinson family's “Uncle Carl” is known as the “patriarch” and “father of the two ocean navy”; the author’s dream is to see a fleet of vessels commissioned for service in the Kingdom of God, flying Christ's ensign and setting sail to spread an aroma of blossomed “Loving-kindness” with which God desires to crown every life.

First published in 1910, “Ships, Sea Songs and Shanties” is a vintage collection of traditional sailing songs, collected and published in this volume by W. B. Whall. Originally appearing in the “Nautical Magazine and Yachting Monthly”, the songs come complete with lyrics and sheet music, as well as pictures of various celebrated sailing ships of the time. William Boultbee Whall (1847–1917) was a Master mariner famous for writing this book. He became a member of the Merchant Navy when he was 14 and became acquainted with the songs during his 11 years aboard ships of the East India Companies. In addition to this volume, Whall also wrote a number of books related to practical seamanship and navigation. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with specially-commissioned new introduction on folk music.
