Excerpt from School History of Virginia A very practical difficulty in the preparation of a text book on history exists in the fact that the length of the school session varies so widely in different locali ties. To meet, as far as it is possible to do, the demands of the school with a full nine months session, as well as the school with a six months session, with a single book, the School History has been so arranged that sections can be omitted without destroying the story as a whole. It is unnecessary to say that. Omissions should not be made unless necessary, but in view of actual difficulties, the text can be shortened to suit the individual school. Excerpt from History of Virginia: For the Use of Schools In deference to the prejudices and tastes of some teachers, I have affixed questions to the different chapters, though my own experience leads me to the conviction that the best mode of teaching history is not by questions, which make the lesson a task, instead of a recreation established in the midst of dryer and more abstruse studies. Let the class read the lesson and the teacher ask full questions upon it: thus a habit of attentive reading is formed, and the history ofa single country does not employ, as is often the case, an entire session. In preparing the book I have freely made use of the labors of others, to whom only a general acknowledgment can be made. The volume is earnestly recommended to the young student, with the hope that he may strive to imitate the many worthy examples held up before him in its pages, and that he may remember that the prosperity and honor of his State in the future, as they did in the past, rest upon the shoulders of her sons. Excerpt from History of Virginia: A Brief Text Book for Schools The Indians of virginia.-when the territory now included in Virginia was first settled by the English, it was occupied by an Indian population numbering about ten thousand, divided among more than forty clans or tribes. Each of these was ruled over by a chief; and about thirty of them were united in a loose confederacy under a head-chief named Powhatan. There were also two smaller confederacies and a few scattering tribes which maintained their independence. All the Virginia Indians belonged to the great Algonkin 1 family. Excerpt from A History of Education in Virginia IN the preparation of this volume, I have been actuated by a desire to make the history of Education in Virginia accessible to teachers and students, and to place it within the reach of all who have any wish to become acquainted with the story of the educational progress of the State. It need not be said that it is impossible to describe within the limits of this volume the whole history of education in Virginia. Out of the mass of material which would have filled many volumes, the effort has been made to select only the essential facts and tell a brief story of the growth centering about these salient features. Excerpt from The Story of a Southern School: The Episcopal High School of Virginia Seven years ago, at the request of friends whose wish I had every reason to respect, I began assembling the materials for this History. I could give to it only a certain part of my summer vacations. The searching of records and the necessary correspondence with widely scattered sources of information made the process of gathering the data a slow one. Then came the tragedy of the World War with its many engrossing tasks and anxieties, and with its enlargments of the scope of the History. A great deal of time was required to bring this part of the record to its present measure of completeness, and it is the result of indefatigable labor by members of the School staff. As a human document this history should contain much of living interest. Among schools of like character the Episcopal High School has achieved a singularly honorable name for its atmosphere, standards and results. A leading Northern educator, whose life has been given to the religious education of boys, said lately after a wide tour of inspection: "I know of no better work than that which is being done at the Episcopal High School of Virginia."
