Excerpt from Saved for a Purpose It was a rude hovel built of rough clapboards, with only two small half windows that were arranged opposite each other so as to admit air and sunshine. The roof slanted toward the north and was covered with a heavy tarred paper. It presented to the pedestrian (who sometimes would leave the main traveled road and follow a little path that wound its way through fields and forest across the section) a sad appearance. It told of a life of hardships of one or more persons, as it stood concealed from the busy world among the leafy boughs of some giant oak trees and a dense growth of underbrush in a secluded place in the forest. Happiness is not confined within the walls of mansions, whose fixtures may exceed millions; neither is sadness confined within the log cabin, but all have their portion of joy and trouble earlier or later in life. Excerpt from The Great Concern of Salvation Section I. Preliminary Remark3. - The great concern of man is suggested by three important inquiries; What have I done 2 What shall I do to be saved What shall I render to the Lord To the question, What have - Ewe done 2 the Bible answers, All have sinned, and come short Of the glory of God. If it be asked, What shall we do to be Saved? The answer is, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. And if it be asked, What Shall we render to the Lord for all his mercies we may reply in the words of the Psalmist, I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord; or in the language of the prophet, He hath showed thee. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Excerpt from The Only Way to Be Saved On the day of Pentecost, Peter says to the surrounding multitude - Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. And ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. In this prophetic statement we learn that people were to perform an external work (baptism in water) in order that they might receive the remission of sins, and afterwards the gift of the Holy Ghost. But before attending to the outward work the inward work must be performed - faith and repentance. Faith and repentance go before baptism, and baptism before the remission of sins and the reception of the Holy Ghost. Hence we see the useless and unscrip tural practice of baptizing infants. They cannot exercise faith and repentance, qualifications necessary previous to baptism; then, why require the outward work?
